Sample Book Insights:
#1 Selena and I had always been friendly around each other, but professional. I had joined her band a year before, and we had traveled to Mexico together. I had noticed that Selena was lively and outgoing, while I was quiet and observant.
#2 I began to notice Selena’s physical presence, her body tempting me even though she always wore cover-ups over her bikini. I tried not to stare at her, but I did anyway, watching her out of the corner of my eye when I thought she wasn’t looking.
#3 I was determined to ignore everything that had happened with Selena on the plane home from Acapulco. I was going to keep playing guitar in Tejano band fronted by another young singer, Shelly Lares.
#4 I was new to the Tejano world, and I often felt like an imposter. I was a rock guitarist who had never played Tejano music before, but I knew right away that Selena y Los Dinos were rising to the top.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

Selena and I had always been friendly around each other, but professional. I had joined her band a year before, and we had traveled to Mexico together. I had noticed that Selena was lively and outgoing, while I was quiet and observant.

#2

I began to notice Selena’s physical presence, her body tempting me even though she always wore cover-ups over her bikini. I tried not to stare at her, but I did anyway, watching her out of the corner of my eye when I thought she wasn’t looking.

#3

I was determined to ignore everything that had happened with Selena on the plane home from Acapulco. I was going to keep playing guitar in Tejano band fronted by another young singer, Shelly Lares.

#4

I was new to the Tejano world, and I often felt like an imposter. I was a rock guitarist who had never played Tejano music before, but I knew right away that Selena y Los Dinos were rising to the top.

#5

Selena was already a showstopper before she joined the band. She had a cute figure, she could dance like no one else, and her voice was incredible. I felt her command of the stage.

#6

By 1984, Selena had already recorded her first album with Los Dinos on the Freddie label. She had released a major hit single, Dame un Beso, written by A. B. and keyboardist Ricky Vela, in 1986. By 1987, she had been crowned Female Entertainer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards.

#7

I became a fan of Selena y Los Dinos, and when I heard that they were playing in San Antonio, I invited A. B. from the band to come check me out. I was looking for a guitar player who could not only play traditional Tejano music, but help the band start covering more commercial rock and pop songs.

#8

I had been working with the band Shelly’s band, Pat Benatar, on a song, when A. B. came to see me. He had heard good things about my guitar playing, and he asked if I wanted to join his band, Los Dinos. I accepted, and that decision set the course of my life.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I had a girlfriend in San Antonio, and I didn’t want to jeopardize my job.
