Sample Book Insights:
#1 I was with Timmy, and we were on our way back from killing a Mongol. We had to make sure that the victim didn’t look like he was coming back.
#2 The next afternoon, Timmy, JJ, and I went to a Pizza Hut to get some food. We hadn’t seen Bobby or the other boys yet, so we wanted their tension to build. JJ’s fear was convincing and effective.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I was with Timmy, and we were on our way back from killing a Mongol. We had to make sure that the victim didn’t look like he was coming back.

#2

The next afternoon, Timmy, JJ, and I went to a Pizza Hut to get some food. We hadn’t seen Bobby or the other boys yet, so we wanted their tension to build. JJ’s fear was convincing and effective.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was a wide receiver for the Arizona Wildcats, and I was lightly scouted. I went to the NFL Combine, but from the minute I walked onto the field, I realized that my chances of making it were slim to none. I ended up at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, where I would transform from a star college athlete to a hardened undercover cop.

#2

The author was with the ATF when he caught up with Provestgaard, who had just shot and killed his wife. He had the author in front of him, his arm around his neck, the Rossi gun at his temple.

#3

I was shot in the chest, and while I was in the hospital, the doctors found a hole in my chest that was being fed by a clear tube. I had never felt such pain and discomfort.

#4

I woke up after the operation, and I was in a bed in a recovery room. I was surrounded by nurses and doctors, and I was hooked up to several machines. I prayed that I would get back to the streets, back to work.

#5

After I was shot, I began to feel the first pangs of invincibility. I couldn’t be stopped. I had a rush of near-death that I’d never known before. I wanted to get as close to that flying bullet as possible.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

I loved my job. I’d done and seen things that citizens simply don’t do or see. I’d been in several shoot-outs, bought and sold tons of drugs, and made hundreds of solid collars. I’d worked African-American gangbangers and Italian mobsters with Chris Bayless.

#2

I went undercover in Bullhead as a biker in September 2001. I helped Gwen get the kids off to school, and bought Dale a used guitar. On September 11, I was at home getting ready to leave when Chris Bayless called. I was sure the case would be deep-sixed or at least put on hold, but this didn’t happen.

#3

I was often amused by how quickly suspects would trust me. criminality is a brutal, sometimes comical, game of one-upmanship. Bad guys are constantly trying to prove to one another and themselves that they're badder and harder than the next guy.

#4

The term One Percent originated when bikers ran roughshod over a 1947 motorcycle rally in Hollister, California. The name stuck, and was proudly worn by those riders who considered themselves to be outlaws.

#5

I set up some deals with Core and Sean McManama, and with McManama’s help, had Tim Holt custom-manufacture the silencers. I went to pick up my bike and found Varvil fiddling at his workbench, wearing baby-blue nurse’s scrubs.
