Sample Book Insights:
#1 On May 1, Chris Henkle and his friend Dee Connors went fishing. It was a welcome day off for Chris, who had a long-standing arrangement to go fishing with his friend Dee. As they launched the small boat into the choppy waters, it started raining. The seas were rough, and the wind was blowing.
#2 After closing the bag, Henkle nervously dialed 911 on his cell phone. The dispatcher told him to go to Island 4, where the Bridge-Tunnel police would meet him. When the same thing happened at Island 2, Henkle became angry.
#3 The legs were sent to the medical examiner, who determined that they were male. They had no smell or blood where the knees had been cut, as though someone had started to cut and had suddenly stopped.
#4 The investigation was focused on who the legs belonged to. They were in fairly good condition, with only a little dampness, and there were no signs of blood or biological fluids. But the two black plastic trash bags, which had contained the legs, were covered in a slimy wet film.

The second suitcase was found on the beach, and when opened, it revealed the torso of a white male, his head and arms still attached. The torso was lying on its back in the suitcase, with the right arm up over the shoulder.

#6

The torso was placed in a freezer until it could be autopsied the next day. The insides were visible, but there was no blood on the body itself. The hands had washerwoman’s syndrome, which was severe wrinkling from the effects of being in the water so long.

#7

The autopsy of the body revealed that the victim had been shot three times: in the chest, lower abdomen, and head. The second bullet was found loose on the gurney, close to the waist area. It was covered in green fibers like those used in furniture upholstery.

The third and final Kenneth Cole Reaction suitcase was found floating off the Bridge-Tunnel’s second island, where it was drifting in the current. It was placed in a white body bag and taken to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk.

#9

On May 19, Detective Ray Pickell took over the case. He asked a police sketch artist to prepare a drawing of the head from photographs, so he could develop some phone calls to identify who the victim was.

#10

On May 21, the suitcase victim sketch led off the early morning news on all four TV network affiliates. Susan Rice, a Chesapeake mother of three, was dressing for work when she saw the sketch and recognized it as belonging to her husband's best friend, Bill McGuire.

#11

The next day, Detective Pickell received confirmation that the victim’s fingerprints matched William McGuire’s. When he informed Woodbridge police, Detective Joraskie offered to personally give Melanie McGuire the official death notification.
