Cryptocurr ency has been in the news.
P eople trade millions of “coins” every day .
T hese coins are a kind of money . But they
are no t lik e traditional cash. What makes
so many people w ant them?
Digital Cash
Crypto
is short for “cryp tograph y .” T his
is a code. It k eeps data hidden. Currency
is money . Cryptocurrency is a type of
digital cash . It hides who uses it.

F AST F A CT : Gold was found in
California in 1848. P eople rushed there from all
over the world. About 300,000 were mining gold
by 1855. T he gold ran out five years later.
Digital cash is a kind of money . P eople buy things
with it. T hey can invest in it too. But there ar e k ey
differences. Cash is ph ysical. People can hold it in
their hands. Countries control it. Digital cash is no t
physical. R ecords ar e only online. No country controls
it. Banks do no t either. P eople do.

Some say it i s lik e gold. T his is because people mine
for it. T here is a kind of frenzy about it too. Man y
hope to get rich. It is lik e the Gold Rush of the 1850s.
 


Fraud or the F uture?
T here are people who lik e digital cash a lot. T hey
think this is the money of the futur e. T o them, it is
safe and private. Some ha ve made money with it.
Others do not tru st digital cash. T hey say it is a
fad. T he coins have no real v alue. Some even call
it a fraud . W arren Buffett is a money expert. He
said digital cash “. . . will come to a bad ending.” He
swor e he would never buy it.
F AST F A CT : Bitcoin is the most
well-known digital cash. T here are many o thers.
All use the same basic system.
 


No one kno ws what the future will bring. But digital
cash may pla y a big part. It is changing how people
think of money .
YOUNG MILLIONAIRE
Erik F inman turned 12. His grandmo ther gave him a gift
of $1,000. He used the money to buy his first bitcoin.
T his was in 2011. Over time, Finman bought more. By the
time Finman turned 19, he o wned 401 bitcoins and was
a millionaire. Finman tells young people to buy digital
cash. But he also gives advice. Only invest what you are
willing to lose. Experts give this advice too. Digital cash
has shot up in price, and prices can sink just as fast.
