Chapter 1

Peter O’Brian’s House
The click sound that his new shoes made on the porcelain tiles, the beep that the garage door remote control made and the purr of his vehicle as it started.
What a beautiful day , Peter O’Brian thought to himself, as he slowly reversed his brand new black Jaguar out of his Florida mansion.
Peter was a 35-year-old, five-and-a-half foot tall, good-looking man, medium build, with black hair going slightly grey. Peter reached over and gently rubbed his hand across the top of his laptop that sat on the passenger seat beside him. He was so proud of the work that he had put into this project, day, night and weekends; all the sacrifice that he had put into completing this engineering design of the new space station was now complete. The toll this had taken on his wife and two boys had been enormous.
Peter graduated at the top of his class in Space Engineering at the prestigious Trinity College Dublin. At the young age of 24, he was quickly employed by the leading space engineering company Ry-Cor. Ry-Cor had put millions and millions of dollars into designing a space station to not only house astronauts but also to supply equipment for our colonisation of the red planet Mars.
He had devoted four long, gruelling years to this engineering design of enormous proportion for this space station. The station would serve as a base camp, so to speak, and launching facility.
Peter’s Ry-Cor office division was a level-five security, which meant he must pass through two check points, and once he had parked his car in the lower level car park, Peter then must complete a body scan. This normally annoyed Peter, but not today, because today was the day of his presentation. He got to show off his ability as the best space engineer the world had to offer.
Nervous but excited at the same time – that was how Peter felt. He hated public speaking, and it had never been a strong point of his. In his head, he was going over the presentation and the highlights he must hit on to sell his design to the board of directors. Reaching out to push the illuminated button for the lift in the luxurious foyer, the door opened immediately. Walking into the lift, Peter pushed the button for level five, Board Rooms.
“HOLD THE LIFT!” yelled a petite, blonde-haired woman, Peter knew her well; she also worked on Peter’s floor. Peter quickly pushed his hands between the lift doors
“Sorry, Deb, I didn’t notice you. I’m a bit distracted this morning.”
“I’m sure you are with the presentation this morning. Your mind must be racing,” Deb replied.
Peter nervously responded, “Oh, you know about the presentation?”
“Everyone in our division knows about your presentation, and everyone also knows that you will nail the contract.”
“I honestly hope so, Deb. I have put so much into this project!” Peter said proudly
“Out of the three engineers they have competing for this, were all rooting for you, Peter. Break a leg, as they say,” Deb said with a smile.
After the pleasantries came the accursedness of watching the numbers of each floor light up in what felt like an extremely long time.
BING, LEVEL FIVE.
The lift doors slid open, and in front of Peter was a glass wall. He could see a huge, cedar boardroom conference table, and Peter thought to himself, that table could seat at least 30 people!
But, in fact, there were 12 board members in total.
Through the glass wall, Peter could clearly see one of his competitors, Jeff Dejersy. He was roughly around the same age as Peter. Jeff was short and thin, his hair was completely grey. Jeff had graduated from Oxford University around the same time as Peter. Peter also knew that Jeff was at the top of their field in space engineering.
Jeff was packing away all his laptop and blueprints just as Peter reached the door of the boardroom. Jeff turned to face Peter, staring him in the eyes for the slightest time. He then reached out and took a hold of the leather strap of his satchel, which he flung over his shoulder, and as he was walking towards Peter, all the board members were shaking Jeff’s hand and slapping him on the back.
By seeing this, Peter knew that Jeff had just delivered a great presentation.
“Jeff,” Peter said, “I didn’t know that your presentation was scheduled for this morning. I thought it was tomorrow afternoon?”
“It was supposed to be tomorrow but I got a call late yesterday; the board had brought my presentation forward.”
“How do you think you went, Jeff?”
“Let’s just say, good luck, Peter, as you are going to need it to top my design,” Jeff said with a sarcastic smile on his face.
Peter didn’t have time to respond to Jeff’s comment. One of the board members came over and put out his hand to shake Peter’s, and he slowly made his way down the line of people. The last person to meet was a five-foot, overweight man who introduced himself as Gary Little, the head of the board.
“OK, Peter, that’s all the pleasantries of the meet and greet out of the way. Make yourself comfortable and I’ll get Tracey my PA to grab some tea and coffee for us all, while you get set up for your presentation,” Gary pushed the yellow button on the boardroom intercom.
“Tracey, if you don’t mind, some tea and coffee please,” Gary said with a smile and a cheesy grin as he looked around at all the board members.
Peter attached his laptop and handed out some paperwork for everyone.
Tracey entered the room with a tray of tea, coffee and cookies.
“Shut the door on your way out, Tracey,” was all Gary said, again with the smile.
Trace placed the tray in the centre of the table and walked to the two large opened timber doors. Tracey slowly turned and returned the cheesy grin to Gary before closing both doors shut.
The board of directors all took their seats. Gary Little walked over with a pitcher of water and offered Peter a glass. Peter accepted the water; his throat was so dry due to nerves. He slid his USB stick into the side of his laptop and said to himself, “Let’s win this account, Peter O’Brian.”
Peter began his presentation. He was roughly ten minutes into his presentation when he started to notice board members whispering and giving each other strange looks.
Gary Little stood up out of his chair, “We will have to stop you there, Peter. Is this some sort of joke?”
“No, not at all,” Peter replied, totally confused.
“There must be some sort of mix up here. This is the exact presentation that Jeff Dejersy just delivered,” Gary said while looking at all the personnel inside the boardroom.
“I’m sorry, what did you say?” Peter said.
“I said, Jeff Dejersy just gave us his presentation and design of the space station, and yours is exactly the same,” Gary said, now starting to sound a bit short of breath.
“We don’t have time to waste, Peter. Is your design ready or not?”
“This is my design; I don’t understand what’s going on here,” the look on Peter’s face was of total confusion.
Gary Little pushed the yellow button on the board room intercom again, “Tracey, can you get me Jeff Dejersy on the line immediatel
