New EU video on working animals
The European Commission's Directorate-general for H ealth and Consumers finishes its participation in the international Salone del Gusto food fair in Turin, Italy with the premiere of a video on working animals and a conference on Animal Welfare.With over 250,000 visitors from25-29 October 2012, the Salone is one of the biggest fairs of its kind. It offers the Commission a unique opportunity to present its work on safeguarding the food chain for Europe's consumers and show a new video on working animals.
From Farm to Fork Stand
On the Commission's stand at theSalone del Gusto, designed specifically for children and families, visitors can get involved in interactive cooking demonstrations and other activities to learn about what goes in to ensuring the "from farm to fork" policy. The main aim is to make sure that the food on our plates is safe. In four free cooking demonstrations per day, Turin chef Daniele Spada cooks with children and explains them the importance of knowing where your food comes from, food safety, nutrition, animal welfare, and also show great ways to reduce the amount of food waste.
Working animals video premiere
Today the Commission takes the opportunity presented byTerra Madreto launch itsvideo on the welfare of working animalsat the fair. The video is produced in collaboration with theBrooke organization. It shows the work that the Commission and the Food and Agriculture Organization are doing to improve animal welfare in developing countries.
Animal Welfare Conference
The central topic of theConference on Animal Welfareis 'A Win-Win Opportunity for Animals, Farmers and Consumers'. Animals are sentient beings and their w elfare is a key value of the European Union. The EU has invested more than any other part of the world in animal welfare. Together with theFood and Agriculture OrganizationFAO, the Commission welcomes international distinguished speakers to discuss challenges and opportunities springing up around animal welfare. B esides their ethical value, farming practices that take into account high animal welfare standards guarantee greater productivity, better quality, more food safety and added value for farmers.
