Can you describe what you learned/gained from applying to the Got Outcomes! Coalition of Excellence Awards? “The application process provided the opportunity for the staff and coalition members to revisit the strategic plan, take inventory of our accomplishments, track progress and/or setbacks, and put the great work into writing. Our intention for applying was to showcase the amazing contribution and impact the coalition has provided and to provide national recognition to the innovative blending of youth development and environmental prevention. As a recipient of the Got Outcomes award, we have not only accomplished receiving national recognition for the coalitions efforts, we have provided an extra layer of gratitude and appreciation to our coalition members – many of whom volunteer their time.” Danielle Campbell Got Outcomes! 2007 Winner Program Manager/Coalition Director, Butte Youth Now “As Missoula wrote its application it became aware of the importance of the assessment process and its integration into the logic model. Past Winners Speak About their Experience
Question:
The Got Outcomes application process is designed to serve as a learning
experience for those that apply. Can you describe what you learned/gained from
applying to the Got Outcomes! Coalition of Excellence Awards?
“The application process provided the opportunity for the staff and coalition members to revisit the strategic
plan, take inventory of our accomplishments, track progress and/or setbacks, and put the great work into
writing. Our intention for applying was to showcase the amazing contribution and impact the coalition has
provided and to provide national recognition to the innovative blending of youth development and
environmental prevention. As a recipient of the Got Outcomes award, we have not only accomplished
receiving national recognition for the coalitions efforts, we have provided an extra layer of gratitude and
appreciation to our coalition members – many of whom volunteer their time.”

“As Missoula wrote its application it became aware of the importance of the assessment process and its
integration into the logic model. While we have always paid quite a bit of attention to assessments I think
putting it in writing and looking at it strategically showed us how much we do rely on assessment and how
that work benefitted our successful implementation strategies and the subsequent evaluation processes.
Since that time, we have given even more credence to assessment and are always able to show a need for
the actions taken.”

“The Got Outcomes Process challenged us to think in ways that were much more systemic. While we work
day to day in prevention, it’s easy to get focused on the minute details and lose sight of the big picture. The
Got Outcomes award process allowed us a chance to step back and evaluate our programs in a way that we
could see how different programs from different funding sources worked together to affect several areas of
prevention, and that working with different small groups of our target population could make waves and
change the population as a whole.”
Mike McBride

“Applying for the Got Outcomes Award was a great exercise to concisely putting on paper what our coalition
has accomplished. It tells MATForce’s total story to date in a thorough, logical format. I have been able to
utilize the application in multiple ways.”

“Over the years Revere CARES could not tell "its story" in a clear concise manner or tailor it to the
audience. Through participating in the Got Outcomes process we learned to tell our story and target our
audience. As a result Revere CARES has increased its partnerships and resources as well partnered with
the City to obtain a grant to prevent opioids overdoses.”

Question:
Do you have any advice for those planning to apply in the future?
“My advice would be to use what your coalition has already created. Our coalition was already
implementing their strategic plan – which was based on the Strategic Prevention Framework. We already
had a work plan and logic model, as well as an evaluation plan. Therefore, the application process was not
as difficult.
Tap into the CADCA technical assistance for support! I had frequent contact with our CADCA contact
(Evelyn Yang). She offered to answer questions about the application, technical assistance, and review of
materials/documents. She was a great resource, extremely helpful and very available.”

“If you want the process to be worthwhile it takes some time and some thinking.”

Question:
How has being a CADCA National Coalition Institute Coalition of Excellence
been of value to your coalition?
“As a recipient of the Got Outcomes award, we have not only accomplished receiving national recognition
for the coalitions efforts, we have provided an extra layer of gratitude and appreciation to our coalition
members – many of whom volunteer their time. This validation of the work helps to sustain coalition efforts,
provides local “spotlighting” and credibility of our coalition, has lead to additional media coverage, and
reinforces the power of effective coalition strategies. In addition, some of our youth coalition members were
invited to join us in Washington D.C. for the awards ceremony at CADCA – providing a very unique
experience and appreciation of their work.”

“It rallied the community around the Forum. Key stakeholders in Missoula who were somewhat aware of the
Forum took the time to get to know it better and to find out what its presence meant for Missoula's youth. It
also forced the community to look at why Missoula had substance abuse issues that needed to be
addressed, and that addressing them was not a simple or easy process. It really drove home the point that
prevention requires a multiplicity of players.”

Question:
Do you have any feedback on the entire process? (Phase I Application,
Technical Assistance, Phase II, Reviewer Feedback, etc.)?
“We were very pleased with the technical assistance provided. It’s rare that that amount of time is spent
with applicants. It not only helped us with the process but in general we learned more about strategic
planning. We really appreciated straight forward answers to our questions.”
