Vichy est une station touristique (70 000 habitants), de renommée internationale, créée au XVIIIe s. et développée au cours du XIXe. Entre les deux guerres, et après la seconde Guerre mondiale, elle est devenue une ville moyenne aux fonctions urbaines complètes, en particulier dans l'industrie (22 % du total de l'emploi) et dans le secteur tertiaire (privé ou public, tel que l'hôpital ou l'université). Il y a trente ans, une double crise à la fois dans le thermalisme et l'industrie a posé un problème de reconversion. Dans ce contexte, le tourisme est apparu naturellement comme l'activité à redévelopper dans la perspective du troisième millénaire ; d'une part, par le renouvellement des activités du thermalisme orienté vers la remise en forme, mais d'autre part selon une nouvelle approche réutilisant les grands équipements du siècle précédent (golf, opéra, casino, hippodrome) et promouvant son patrimoine urbain de ville moyenne, proche de Clermont-Ferrand, la métropole régionale.
Vichy is a spa town (70 000 habitants), well known throughout the word. К was created in the 18th century and developed in the19th. Between the two world wars and after the second world war, it became a town with a complete range of urban functions : industry (22% of total employment, similar to the national average) and the tertiary sector (private and public, such as hospital and universities). Thirty years ago, the town faced a twin crisis : the decline of spa treatments and of industry ; this led to restructuring. Tourism now appears the obvious way for development to take place in the new millenium. First, this involves the renewal of the spa facilities linked to health and fitness ; it also concerns entrancing the major urban amenities of the neighting century (golf course, opera house, casino and race course. . .) as well as promoting the town's urban heritage. Today this town located near by Clermont- Ferrand, the regional centre, has developed new forms of tourism, as in other medium-sized town.
