Hokies face JMU in non-conference weekend
Tech success at home:Since 1989, when the Hokies began playing at English Field, they are 18-5 all-time in home openers including its 17-9 win over Niagara to open this year. Tech is 378-19-3 in 23 seasons at English Field and had won 58 games at home over the past three seasons, just under 20 per season. They have 11 this year, but înish the regular season with a 10-game home stand (now with nine more left).
Team power:The Hokies have hit 57 home runs this season, which leads the ACC by 17, over Wake Forest, and was îfth in the nation entering the week. Tech was also third in the country in doubles (112), fourth in triples (24), and îfth in slugging & (.494).
More on the power:Andrew Rashleads the ACC with 17 home runs, 125 total bases and a .776 slugging %. Those numbers put him fourth, sixth and 10th respectively in the nation entering the week. (More information on rankings can be found on page 7.) Tim Smallingis second in the conference in home runs (9) and total bases (108), which is 53rd and 34th in the country.
Last thing on the power:Of the 57 home runs hit by the Hokies this season, more than half have been solo (30), while 13 of those have been lead-off shots. There have been 19 hit with one man on, eight have been hit with two on board, andRonnie Shabanhit the team’s îrst grand slam versus Florida State (4/16). In all, Tech has recorded 303 RBI, 93 on home runs (30.7%).
More national numbers:Entering the week,Michael Seabornwas 25th in the nation in runs, 84th in doubles and 19th in sacriîce ies,Shabanwas 58th in triples and 33rd in RBI,Rashwas 55th in doubles and 39th in RBI,Johnny Moraleswas 25th in sacriîce bunts, andMarc Zecchinowas 30th in strikeouts and 18th in Ks per nine innings.
The Tech Ironman:Seabornhas now started 141 consecutive games at second base. The last time Seaborn was not starting at second was March 22, 2009.
Offensive coming alive:Over the last 17 games, Tech is 13-4 (8-4 in the ACC) and has reached double îgures in hits 13 times (in the three-game series at Duke they had nine hits in each game). The Hokies have also hit a home run in 15 of their last 19 games. They are averaging 8.5 runs per game in the span and are batting .330, while their opponents at hitting just .276 and scoring 4.9 runs a game.
The series:Tech is 23-31 against the Dukes all-time and are 11-14 in Blacksburg. The teams last met in 2009 for a home-and-home and the Hokies took both including a 13-9 decision at English Field to extend their win streak to three straight over JMU.
