C ill e one in a series of  conferences that aim to focus gloal oliti cal attention toards the need for olicy interventions in the areas of environ ment and develoment, no commonly called sustainale develoment ar ing the 20th anniversary of the landmar “Rio Earth ummit” of 2 the nited ations Conference on Environment and eveloment, held in Rio de aneiro— hich itself mared the 20th anniversary of the eually landmar tocholm conference of 2 the nited ations Conference on the uman Environment, held in tocholm, eden—the ucoming conference is eing oularly referred to as “Rio+20” his title emodies the hoe that C ill attract the same attention and imort as its to illustrious redecessors et, other confer ences ith similar goals—for eamle, the less distinguished 2002 conference in ohannesurg dued “Rio+0” the orld ummit on ustainale eveloment or the no largelyforgotten “tocholm+0” held in 2 in airoi, enya—did not live u to their on asirations2
