Progressive Cavity
screw pump in indiaO  A progressive cavity pump is a type of positive
displacement pump and is also known as a progressing
cavity pump, progg cavity pump, eccentric screw pump
or cavity pump. It transfers fuid by means of the
progress, through the pump, of a sequence of small,
fxed shape, discrete cavities, as its rotor is turned.
O This leads to the volumetric fow rate being proportional
to the rotation rate (bidirectionally) and to low levels of
shearing being applied to the pumped fuid. Hence
these pumps have application in fuid metering and pumpi
ng of viscous or shear-sensitive materials.
The cavities taper down toward their ends and overlap
with their neighbours, so that, in general, no fow
pulsing is caused by the arrival of cavities at the outlet,
other than that caused by compression of the fuid or
pump components.O These pumps are often referred to by the specifc
manufacturer or product names. Hence names can
vary from industry to industry and even regionally;
examples include: Moineau (after the inventor, René
Moineau), Mono pump, Mohno pump.
O A progressive cavity pump also can act as a motor
(mud motor) when fuid is pumped through its interior.
Applications include well drilling. The principle of this pumping
technique is frequently misunderstood.
Often it is believed to occur due to a
dynamic efect caused by drag, or friction
against the moving teeth of the screw
rotor. In reality it is due to the sealed
cavities, like a piston pump, and so has
similar operational characteristics, such as
being able to pump at extremely low rates,
even to high pressure, revealing the efect
to be purely positive displacementTypical application area

Use of a PCP system should be evaluated for situati
ons that are:
* High-viscosity oil wells
* High-sand-cut wells
* Low-productivity wells
* Gassy wells
* Directional- and horizontal-well applications
* Hostile fuid conditions
* High-speed operations (see discussion of impact in
Rod and tubing design for PCP systems
* Coalbed-methane and water-source wells
* Elevated-temperature applications
  While PCP systems can operate at
greater depths and temperatures than
indicated above,
those listed are potentially good application
where a PCP should be evaluated.
