[1] Cette plaisanterie était dans l'édition de Zadig de 1748. Elle existait encore dans l'édition in-4° (tome XVII, publié en 1771). Mais ayant été omise dans l'édition encadrée de 1795, elle ne fut pas reproduite dans les éditions de Kehl. La première des éditions modernes où on la trouve est celle de M. Lequien, 1823. B.

Je soussigné, qui me suis fait passer pour savant, et même pour homme d'esprit, ai lu ce manuscrit, que j'ai trouvé, malgré moi, curieux, amusant, moral, philosophique, digne de plaire à ceux mêmes qui haïssent les romans. Ainsi je l'ai décrié, et j'ai assuré monsieur le cadi-lesquier que c'est un ouvrage détestable.
