consequences of their actions? Is it worth it to do the right thing? Does crime pay? Those ancient questions of justice were addressed once again this week after the death of Osama bin Laden.  Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an  operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, and a terrorist whos responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children, President Obama announced from the White House late last Sunday night. Bin Laden, the architect of the attacks of September 11, 2001, was killed in a firefight with a top American military counter-terrorism unit and then quickly buried at sea.  Following the 911 attacks, bin Laden had successfully evaded those searching for him for almost a decade. Many thought he was hiding in a cave in the remote regions of Pakistan or Afghanistan. However, it was discovered that the terrorist mastermind was actually living in a custom-built hideout not far from a Pakistani military academy.  After months of consulting with his top advisors, President Obama gave the order to attack that compound. On that order, U.S. helicopters transported members of Navy SEAL Team Six into bin Ladens lair and back out again in less than 40 minutes. Bin Laden and three male terrorists were killed after they resisted the assault. One woman was killed when a terrorist used her to shield him from gunfire. No Americans were lost in the raid.  The news brought quick responses. George W. Bush called bin Laden's death a victory for America and congratulated Obama and US intelligence and military forces. No matter how long it takes, justice will be done, Bush added. In spontaneous celebrations, thousands gathered outside the gates of the White House, cheering, waving US flags, and shouting USA, USA! Another large crowd gathered at Ground Zero in New York City singing God Bless America  .  New Yorker Diane Massarolis husband was killed in the World Trade Center attack. I do feel some overall calm that I havent felt in almost 10 years, Massaroli said. I feel that justice is done.  As students arrive, give each of them a copy of the above news story to read. After all teens have had the opportunity to read the article, discuss it in this way:  What personal memories, if any, do you have of the 911 attacks? Since Osama bin Laden was a fugitive for so long, had you given up hope that he would be brought to justice? Why or why not? Even though he was not killed until last Sunday, what other consequences might have bin Laden experienced daily because of what he had done?  Sometimes consequences for behavior occur almost immediately. Talk about a situation in which someone was rewarded or punished very quickly after something happened. Other times, the results of certain actions are not seen until years later. Think of something in your own life that you have been told will catch up with you eventually or will pay off in the long run. Share about it.  The news of such a prominent terrorist being killed reminds us that actions have consequences. We are reminded that even our day-to-day decisions have an impact on our lives both now and in the future. This is no more obvious than it is in our relationship to our parents. Lets see what the Bible says about the results of acknowledging or rejecting parental authority.
