What About the Homeless in Santa Barbara? Santa Barbara is one of the wealthiest cities in the USA, yet they have their share of homeless people too. You may thinkyou’veheard the story beforementally ill person loses their job and their home, causing them to live on the streetsyet for many homeless people, their reasons can be as numerous as the hazards suffered from outdoor living. For author Ken Williams, he lives in Santa Barbara and has written a fictionalized account about a homeless woman and the struggles of her family to get her to come home. His book,Fractured Angeldeals with the homeless problem in California. California has a huge problem, particularly with homeless youth. Along with Texas and Florida, numbers of youth aged under 18 are greater than any other state. These are youths who are not accompanied by any other family member. Many people erroneously believe that once homeless, always homeless, yet many people who find themselves on the streets usually find a way out of it within a few month’stime. For some, they live in cars, or even at afriend’sor arelative’shome. Officially, they’restill considered homeless. Many homeless people have no wish to live in a shelter or a home, and they stay on the streets. This may be one of the most frustrating aspects for the social worker, as living on the streets presents many of its own hazards. Sadly, the homeless in California, and in particular, the homeless in Santa Barbara, are increasing over time. The reasonsaren’tall the same either. Conflict and abuse at home contribute to youths running away, as well as natural disasters, evictions, lack of affordable rental property, mental illness, physical disability, and criminal activity, that can all have an effect on whether a person can find and keep a warm home. In LA alone, the homelessness has increased over twelve percent in the past two years. The census indicated that fewer people were able to find affordable shelter during that time. This Santa Barbara author has made up a fictional character who begins to suffer from a mental illness, and has a family whodoesn’tunderstand it, so she feels the only way to cope is to leave and live on the streets of Santa Barbara.
When was the last time you read books about the homeless? It’snot exactly prime reading material on the shelf, nor about books about poverty. Ken Williams is not afraid to write about the homeless in California. In fact, this topic can be quite interesting to read about, and perhaps more authors will want to tackle this touchy topic. Please visit KenWilliams’swriter site to learn more about“FracturedAngel”and some of the other books he has written. Homelessness affects us all. Wecan’thelp but be swept into the sadness. Just how many of our friends and family hide the fact that they could be next? Source 1.http://www.scpr.org/news/2015/05/11/51616/homelessness-increasing-in-los-angeles-according-t/
