Accuracy and uncertainty in flow simulation3 December 2010Solution Verification: Overview of the Lisbon WorkshopsL. Eça(Instituto Superior Técnico, TU Lisbon)
Accuracy and uncertainty in flow simulation3 December 2010Everything included in this presentation is joint work with M. Hoekstra from the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands and it is part of an on going cooperation between MARIN and IST
Contents1.MotivationAccuracy and uncertainty in flow simulation2. Numerical error/uncertainty3. Workshops overview4. Extra results5. Final Remarks3 December 2010
1.MotivationAccuracy and uncertainty in flow simulation3 December 2010-In 1998/99 the ITTC resistance committee started a“debate” about a “standard” procedure for the estimation of the error/uncertainty of a numericalsolution-The proposed procedure was based on Richardsonextrapolation which is also the basis of the G.C.I.proposed by Patrick J. Roache-The estimation of the error/uncertainty requires three numerical solutions in the “asymptotic range”
1.MotivationAccuracy and uncertainty in flow simulation3 December 2010-Our initial tests were performed for calculation ofthe flow around a model scale tanker with the time-averaged RANS equations ended with a setof 24 grids and a lot of scatter in the data-Subsequent tests performed for simplest problems(Laplace equation, laminar driven cavity) showed that the problem is not trivial and that some issueshave to be dealt with carefully (grid similarity, attaining the “asymptotic range”, post-processing,)…
