1937PREFACE.
This volume of to the inscriptions of theSouth-Indiaîx Inscriptioiis (Texts) relates
Madras EpigrapHcal (î^os. 1 toCollection, for the years 1902 (Nos- 416 to 663) aixd 1903
one is438). Of the 754numbers contained liereia, 25 hâve been. pnblished alreadyand
completely damaged. For the fiill texts are given. Excepting 13remaiaing 728,
inscriptions which are 713 are in Tamil»in Kannada and 2 in Telngu, the rest, viz.^
in the previons theAs voliim,e, three appendices are given to help thereader in studying
history of any particular king or dynasty. Since the Annual Reports on Epigraphy
for the years 1903 and 1904 dealt theprincipalinscriptionshâve with theimportance of
this collection,in ît is unnecessary to give hère any lengthy account of thenj,. But
référence m.ay, however, be made to the contents of such of the valnable epigraphs as
hâve not been reported npon.
The earliest inscriptions in the volume belong to the Pallavas—one of Param.es-
varavarman, one of Tellàrrerinda ISTandivarman and another of Nripatunga, Pallava
rule in the south is not only marked by the inscriptions of the family but also by the
naming of cities, tanks, channels, etc., after the names or snrnames of the
kings and theîr queens. Paramëévara-mangalam and Paramësvara-vâykkàl occnr
Nos.in 9, 104 and 304, Ekadhîra-chaturvëdinxangalam, probably named after Nandi-
varman Pallavamalla, is mentioned No. and Aggalanemmadi-chaturvëdi-in 303,
mangalam,:» caHed after the qneen of Nandivarman III, finds place in IsTo. 304. Vijayân-
kura-chaturvëdimangalam, mentioned in a few other inscriptions (Nos. 547, 572-3566,
and 584), might hâve been similarly named. Inscriptions of the later Pallava king
—Ferufijinga, ^who is varionsly styled Avaniyâlappirandàn, Bharatamvallaperumâl,
Mallaikâvalan, Pallavafvëndan and reveal theNissankamaUan,— names of the chiefs
who issued his orders. Among them figure his own sons Sôlakôn and Vënâudaiyàn.
Perafijinga and his sons seem to hâve eamed great renown by the services
they rendered to temples. The big tower of seven storeys on the sonthem
side of the Natarâja temple at Chidambaram, contaiaing scnlptural représentations
of the varions postures in dancing, was erected by Perunjinga and bore his surname
Sokkachchîyan (No. 51). Costly gifts made by him to this temple are registered in
inscriptions. Anot
