 EDITORIAL
A continent of innovation
This year, the European Union is upping the innovation ante as it embarks on a new seven-year financial cycle (2007-2013) calibrated to boost the innovative capacity of the EU. Many ob-servers will find it fitting that Germany, the world’s third-largest economy, has been charged with the EU’s rotating presidency for the first six months of this new phase. This edition’s special feature and interview with German Minis-ter of State for Europe Günter Gloser explore the presidency’s plans for EU innovation policy and how it intends to manage the step change in Europe’s commitment to the Lisbon Partnership for Growth and Jobs. Germany’s attitude is that change begins at home and it has embarked on a robust high-tech strategy to reclaim its mantle as the land of ideas, while helping to promote innovation in Europe. Euroabstracts also reviews how the Union is using its regional policy to promote innovation in Europe’s regions. Another pub-lication reviewed provides a fascinating topographical view of Europe’s knowledge and innovation landscape. Innovation may be all about thinking out of the box, but once a new field has been created standards need to be set not only to help protect consumers but to provide businesses with an incentive to innovate. The magazine reviews a publication out-lining the importance of involving SMEs more closely in the standard-setting process. The magazine explores how the EU is shaping up for height-ened global competition and takes a look at the 2006 edition of the European Competitiveness Report as well as how Euro-pean e-business is maturing. Sustainability is also in the frame asEaorurtsbtsacoutlines how the Commission intends to keep Europe moving without hurting the environment, examines the perspectives for zero-emission power plants, and recognises the crucial role of R&D in securing the Union’s energy future.
