GORFINKLE, Ph.D.               Author of "The Eight Chapters of Maimonides on Ethics"_______SECOND EDITION________________________________________SAYINGS OF THE FATHERSOne of the following chapters is read on eachSabbath from the Sabbath after Passover until theSabbath before New Year.
All Israel have a portion in the world to come, and itis said, "And thy people shall be all righteous; theyshall inherit the land for ever, the branch of myplanting, the work of my hands, that I may beglorified."CHAPTER I1. Moses received the Torah from Sinai, andhanded it down to Joshua, and Joshua to theelders, and the elders to the prophets, and theprophets delivered it to the men of the GreatSynagogue. They said three things, "Be deliberatein judgment; raise up many disciples; and make afence about the Torah."2. Simon, the Just, was of the last survivors of theGreat Synagogue. He used to say, "Upon threethings the world rests: upon the Torah, upon theTemple service, and upon the doing of acts ofkindness."3. Antigonus of Soko received (the tradition) fromSimon, the Just. He used to say, "Be not likehirelings who work for their master for the sake ofreceiving recompense; but be like servants whominister to their master without any thought ofreceiving a reward; and let the fear of Heaven beupon you."4. Jose, the son of Joezer, of Zeredah, and Jose, the son of Jochanan, of Jerusalem received (thetradition) from them. Jose, the son of Joezer, of
Zeredah said, "Let thy house be a meeting-placefor the wise; cover thyself with the dust of theirfeet, and drink in their words with thirst."5. Jose, the son of Jochanan, of Jerusalem said,"Let thy house be open wide; let the poor bemembers of thy household, and engage not inmuch gossip with woman." This applies to one'sown wife; how much more, then, to the wife ofone's neighbor? Hence the sages say, "Whosoengages in much gossip with woman brings evilupon himself, neglects the study of the Torah, andwill in the end inherit gehinnom."6. Joshua, the son of Perachyah, and Nittai, theArbelite, received (the tradition) from them.Joshua, the son of Perachyah, said, "Providethyself with a teacher, and possess thyself of acompanion; and judge every man in the scale ofmerit."7. Nittai, the Arbelite, said, "Keep aloof from a badneighbor; associate not with the wicked, andabandon not the belief in retribution."8. Judah, the son of Tabbi, and Simeon, the son ofShatach, received (the tradition) from them. Judah, the son of Tabbi, said, "(In the judge's office) actnot the counsel's part; while the litigants arestanding before thee, let them be regarded by theeas guilty, but when they are departed from thypresence, regard them as innocent, the verdicthaving been acquiesced in by them."9. Abtalion said, "Ye sages, be heedful of yourwords, lest ye incur the penalty of exile and beexiled to a place of evil waters, and the discipleswho come after you drink thereof and die, and theHeavenly Name be profaned."12. Hillel and Shammai received (the tradition)from them. Hillel said, "Be of the disciples of Aaron, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving mankindand drawing them night to the Torah." 13. He usedto say, "A name made great is a name destroyed;he who does not increase (his knowledge)decreases (it); and he who does not studydeserves to die; and he who makes a worldly useof the crown (of the Torah) shall waste away." 14.He used to say, "If I am not for myself, who will befor me? But if I care for myself only, what am I?And if not now, when?"15. Shammai said, "Set a fixed time for thy (studyof) Torah; say little and do much; and receive allmen with a cheerful countenance."t1e6a. cRhaerb; bbaen  qGuait mofa lideol usbati;d ,a "nPdr oavcicdues ttohyms enlfo t wtithhy saelf

Simeon his son, said, "All my days I havegrown up amongst the wise, and I have foundnothing better for man than silence; not learningbut doing is the chief thing; and whoso multiplieswords causes sin."t1h8r.e Re athbibnagns  iSsi mtheeo nw, otrhlde  psroens eorf vGeda; mbayl iterl usthai, db, y"Byjturudtgh maenndt ,t haen dj ubdyg pmeeanct eo,f  apse iat cise  isna iyd,o 'uJr ugdagtee sy.'e" theRabbi Chanania, the son of Akashia, said, "TheHoly One, blessed be He, was pleased to makeIsrael worthy; wherefore He gave them a copiousTorah and many commandments, as it is said, 'Itpleased the Lord, for his righteousness' sake, tomagnify the Torah and make it honorable.'"CHAPTER II
All Israel have a portion in the world to come, and itis said, "And thy people shall be all righteous; theyshall inherit the land for ever, the branch of myplanting, the work of my hands, that I may beglorified".1. Rabbi said, "which is the right course that a manshould choose for himself? That which is a pride tohim who pursues it and which also brings himhonor from mankind. Be as scrupulous about alight precept as about a grave one, for thouknowest not the grant of reward for each precept.Reckon the loss incurred by the fulfilment of aprecept against the reward secured by itsobservance, and the gain gotten by atransgression against the loss it involves. Considerthree things, that thou mayest not come within thepower of sin. Know what is above thee—a seeingeye, and a hearing ear, and all thy deeds written ina book."2. Rabban Gamaliel, the son of Rabbi Judah, thePrince, said, "Excellent is the study of Torahcombined with some worldly pursuit, for the effortdemanded by them both makes sin to be forgotten. All study of Torah without work must at length befutile, and leads to sin. Let all who are employedwith the congregation act with them for Heaven'ssake, for then the merit of their fathers sustainsthem, and their righteousness endures for ever. And as for you (God will then say), 'I account youworthy of great reward, as if you had wrought it allyourselves.' 3. Be on your guard against the rulingpower; for they who exercise it draw no man near
to them except for their own interests; appearingas friends when it is to their own advantage, theystand not by a man in the hour of his need." 4. Heused to say, "Do His will as if it were thy will. Nullifythy will before His will, that He may nullify the will ofothers before thy will."5. Hillel said, "Separate not thyself from thecongregation; trust not in thyself until the day of thydeath; judge not thy neighbor until thou art comeinto his place; and say not anything which cannotbe understood at once, in the hope that it will beunderstood in the end; neither say, 'When I haveleisure I will study'; perchance thou wilt have noleisure." 6. He used to say, "An empty-headed mancannot be a sin-fearing man, nor can an ignorantperson be pious, nor can a shamefaced man learn, nor a passionate man teach, nor can one who isengaged overmuch in business grow wise. In aplace where there are no men, strive to be a man."7. Moreover, he once saw a skull floating on thesurface of the water. He said to it, "Because thoudidst drown (others) they have drowned thee, andat the last they that drowned thee shall themselvesbe drowned." 8. He used to say, "The more flesh, the more works; the more property, the moreanxiety; the more women, the more witchcraft; themore maid-servants, the more lewdness; the moremen-servants, the more robbery; the more Torah, the more life; the more schooling, the morewisdom; the more counsel, the moreunderstanding; the more charity, the more peace. He who has acquired a good name has acquired itfor himself; he who has acquired for himself words
of Torah has acquired for himself life in the world tocome."9. Rabban Jochanan, the son of Zakkai received(the tradition) from Hillel and Shammai. He used tosay, "If thou hast learnt much Torah, ascribe notany merit to thyself, for thereunto wast thoucreated."10. Rabban Jochanan, the son of Zakkai, had fivedisciples, and these are they: Rabbi Eliezer, theson of Hyrcanus; Rabbi Joshua, the son ofHananiah; Rabbi Jose, the Priest; Rabbi Simeon, the son of Nataniel; and Rabbi Eleazar, the son ofArach. 11. He used thus to recount their praise:"Eliezer, the son of Hyrcanus, is a cementedcistern, which loses not a drop; Joshua, the son ofHananiah, happy is she that bare him; Jose, thePriest, is a pious man; Simeon, the son of Nataniel,is a fearer of sin; Eleazar, the son of Arach, is likea spring flowing with ever-sustained vigor." 12. Heused to say, "If all the sages of Israel were in onescale of the balance, and Eliezer, the son ofHyrcanus, in the other, he would outweigh themall." Abba Saul said in his name, "If all the sages ofIsrael were in one scale of the balance, andEliezer, the son of Hyrcanus, also with them, andEleazar, the son of Arach, in the other scale, hewould outweigh them all." 13. He said to them, "Goforth and see which is the good way to which aman should cleave." R. Eliezer said, "A good eye";R. Joshua said, "A good friend"; R. Jose said, "Agood neighbor"; R.
