ReflectionInternational Expositions are independentkingdoms in their corporate relation with othercountries of the world. They are phantomkingdoms wherein the people do everything butsleep. They germinate and grow with phenomenalenergy. Their existence is established withoutconquest and their magic growth is similar to themushroom and the moonflower; they vanish likesetting suns in their own radiance. Thousands ofneophytes of every race, creed and color comewith willing hearts and hands to do homage andbear manna to nourish the sinews of a phantomkingdom. The National Constitution of phantom kingdomscommands that the Spirit of beauty, refinement, education, culture and frolic shall govern. Theresult is that they contain many palaces andshrines decorated with sculpture and painting andthat the earth is studded with fountains and poolswithin tropical gardens. Such a Kingdom existswithin a wonderful valley bordering on a great sea.It is surrounded by high velvet hills of fine contourand by many real cities. As the people look downon this phantom kingdom from the hill-tops, or fromships sailing on the water, they see Architecturenestling like flamingoes with fine feathers unfurledwithin a green setting.
If building Phantom Kingdoms symbolizes man'shighest aims on earth, then the same is true whenbuilding Real Kingdoms. Architecture and the sisterarts are the most reliable barometers in recordinghuman thought. They are direct exponents of auniversal language wherein national progress ismost clearly read.People who build Phantom Kingdoms lookhopefully for universal approval by all mankind.L.C.M.ContentsReflection.
