The art of bowling is to either minimise the number ofRuns scored by the batsman, or preferably to get himOut. These two tasks require quite different strategies, and it’s up to the bowler to decide whether to play defensively and try to keep the run scoring low, or be more attacking and try to take wickets (but with a greater risk of conceding runs).
hOw TO bOwL At the start of eachOver you will be prompted to choose a bowler. Having done so, use the left and right directional buttons to adjust the bowler’s starting position, then begin his run-up by clicking the left mouse button. As the bowler runs up, adjust the cursor to target an approximate area to aim the delivery. Meanwhile, a timing bar appears on-screen to indicate how fast the ball is to be delivered – the closer to the top of the bar, the faster the delivery. At any time after the timing bar appears, press one of the following buttons to perform a certain delivery: Left Mouse Button - Stock delivery + Left Mouse Button - Break to the left + Right Mouse Button - Break to the right Right Mouse Button - Alternative speed ball C+ Left Mouse Button – Special delivery 1(only if bowler is at 100% confidence – see Confidence) C+ Right Mouse Button – Special delivery 2(only if bowler is at 100% confidence)
4
Bowler timing bar
Bowler cursor
Note that if you do not press a button before the timing bar reaches a white line near the top, you risk delivering a No Ball (seeGlossaryin Coaching Mode) and will have to bowl another delivery. Aiming the bowling cursor short so that the ball bounces above the batsman’s head can also be considered aNo Ball (although a certain number of bouncers are permitted per over), as is aiming the bowling cursor long so the ball goes above the batsman’s waist without bouncing. Each No Ball adds one extra run to the batting team’s score.
Similarly, if you aim the bowling cursor a long way to the side of the batsman so that he cannot reach the ball, you will concede aWide(seeGlossaryin Coaching Mode) and will again have to bowl an extra delivery. A Wide also adds an extra run to the batting team score.
oVeR COMPLeTe
An Over consists of six legal deliveries from the same bowler at the same end of the pitch. Once completed, the bowling team will be required to choose a different bowler to bowl another over from the opposite end of the pitch. To do so, simply scroll through the list of all the outfield members of the fielding team. Note that the Wicket Keeper cannot bowl (and you cannot choose a different Wicket Keeper once the match has begun). In ODIs, no bowler is permitted to bowl more than one fifth of the designated innings, so be sure not to use your best bowlers too soon.
sTYLeS Of bOwLING
There are two distinctly different styles of bowling commonly used in cricket:
tHE PàcE bOWLER – (also known as aFast bowler) mainly uses raw speed and power to deliver the ball as fast as possible – often at speeds of up to 100mph. This gives the batsman less time to react and may cause him to mistime his shot, or even miss the ball completely. All bowlers who aren’t spinners are considered to be pace bowlers, though if their fastest delivery is below a certain speed then they are technically known as Medium Pacers.
tHE spIN bOWLER – whether anOff-Spin,Leg-SpinorGooglybowler - has a slower delivery but applies spin to the ball as he releases it, causing the ball to bounce (or “pitch”) in an unexpected direction. This will hopefully confuse the batsman and may leave him unable to get his legs out of the way – resulting in an appeal forLeg Before Wicket(see Dismissalin the Batting controls).

deLIVeRY tYPeS
Each bowler has six types of delivery available to him, four of which can be used at any time and two only when he has built his confidence up to maximum. Depending on what type of bowler he is, these are as follows:

Pace bowler:
Off-spinner:
Leg-spinner:
Seamer.A quick delivery with the seam of the ball pointing vertically so that the ball pitches on the seam with very little deviation or spin.
Off-break.A delivery that spins clockwise through the air, causing it to bounce to the right when pitching (as viewed from the bowler’s angle).
Leg-break.A delivery that spins anti-clockwise through the air, causing it to bounce to the left when pitching (as viewed from the bowler’s angle).

In addition to these ‘natural’ swing conditions, some pace bowlers are able to achieve additional movement of the ball as they release it by holding the seam of the ball at an angle. In order to use this extra swing, press the Mousewheel up or Mousewheel down after releasing the ball to attempt to move the ball left or right respectively.
There are several factors that can cause the ball to deviate in the air after being released by the bowler. Strong winds can cause some movement, some weather conditions are conducive to swing, and the condition of the ball also has a natural effect (this is why the fielding team frequently polish one side of the ball).
movEmEnt in thE air (sWing)
When the bowler releases the ball, the batsman stands still and can begin to play his shot by aiming in any direction and pressing one of the following buttons to perform a certain stroke:
Right Click Left Click LeftA+ Left Click LeftA+ Right Click HoldC+ Any Shot
A batsman has two responsibilities – to avoid getting out, and to score runs. In Test Matches the former is usually the priority at the expense of scoring quickly, whereas in ODIs accumulating runs at a reasonable rate is usually more important even at the risk of losing his wicket.
hOw TO bàT As the bowler approaches, use Mousewheel up or Mousewheel down to move sideways across the batting crease to find a good position to play a shot. Try to avoid blocking the wicket with the batsman’s legs as this risks an LBW appeal if the ball hits him, but also avoid standing too far away from the stumps as this leaves them unguarded.
bàSIc bàTTING
If the batsman is at 100% confidence (see Confidence), holding down theCbutton whilst simultaneously pressing any of the above strokes will Dance Down the Wicket. This is a bold move that, if timed correctly, can gain extra power to a ground or lofted shot to increase the chance of scoring a boundary. However, if the shot is missed, the batsman must quickly step back into his crease by pressing the Left Mouse button, or else be Stumped out by the awaiting wicket keeper.
rUNNING beTweeN THe WIcKeTS
Assuming he was not Bowled out, the batsman can opt to run between the wickets in order to score a run after playing at a shot (regardless of whether contact was made with the ball – see Extras for details of scoring runs without bat hitting ball). This is performed by pressing the Right Mouse button after the ball has either been hit or passed by the stumps.
Both batsmen must reach the opposite wicket before a run is scored, and if the fielding team manage to dislodge the stumps with the ball before a batsman has reached the crease then he has been Run Out. The batsmen can attempt to run between the wickets several times in succession in order to score multiple runs in a single delivery, but this increases the risk of a run out. If the two batsmen begin a run but have not yet crossed, it is possible to abort the run in progress by pressing the Left Mouse button.
scORING bOUNDàRIeS
As well as scoring singles by running between the wickets, good batsmen will look to hit the ball beyond the boundary rope at the edge of the field. If they manage to hit the ball over the rope without bouncing, they score six runs; if it bounces beforehand they score four runs.
Note that if the ball crosses the boundary rope, any runs between the wickets from the same delivery are discounted, so it’s not possible to run a single and also hit a six to score a total of seven runs.
9
EXTRàS Even if the batsman does not make contact with the ball, it is still possible for the batting team to score runs in two ways. Firstly, if the ball deflects off any part of the batsman’s body whilst he is attempting a shot, he can attempt to run between the wickets, with any score counting as Leg Byes.
Secondly, if the ball does not make contact with the batsman at all, any runs scored will be counted as Byes.
dISMISSàL As mentioned above, the batsman risks several methods of dismissal with each legal delivery he faces. He can be given out for any of the following reasons:
Bowled If the batsman fails to prevent the ball from hitting the stumps from the bowler’s delivery.
Caught If the batsman hits the ball to a member of the fielding side without bouncing first.
Caught & Bowled A specific term for a catch taken by the bowler.
leg Before wiCKet (lBw) If the batsman prevents the ball from hitting the stumps by blocking with his leg (or indeed any part of his body) instead of his bat.
stumPed If the batsman dances down the wicket (steps forward out of his crease) but misses the ball, and the wicket keeper dislodges the stumps with the ball before the batsman returns to his crease.
run out If either of the two batsmen attempt to run between the wickets but a member of the fielding side dislodges the stumps with the ball before the batsman reaches the crease.
Note that if the bowler performs a foul delivery – a Wide or No Ball – then the batsman cannot be given out that ball for any of the above reasons except Run Out (which is still possible from any foul delivery), or Stumped (which is still possible from a Wide but not a No Ball).

If the batsman has mistimed a lofted shot and a fielder is nearby, the fielder has the chance to take a catch and dismiss the batsman. In order to do this, a timing bar will appear on-screen, and pressing the Left Mouse button when this timing bar is at the midway point will take the catch. However, if the catch attempt is mistimed then the chance will be dropped.
11
Fielder timing bar
tHROwING BàcK
If a fielder collects the ball after it has already bounced, he will be more concerned with returning the ball to the stumps to prevent run scoring, and potentially run out the batsmen if they are already attempting to run between the wickets.
If the batsmen are not attempting to score a run, the fielder will automatically return the ball to the wicket keeper; but if a run is being attempted then the timing bar will appear. Left clicking at the midway point will throw the ball back to the wicket keeper’s end to attempt a run out, whilst right clicking when the timing bar is midway will throw the ball to the bowler’s end. If the throw is mistimed then the run out attempt will fail, and the ball could possibly be overthrown past the stumps and into the outfield on the other side. If this occurs, the batsmen may attempt to run again.
seTTING YOUR FIeLD
Excluding the fixed positions of bowler and wicket keeper, there are 9 other players in the fielding side who can move to various positions around the field in order to take catches (known as an attacking field) or prevent run-scoring (a defensive field).
Before the bowler begins his run-up, the field can be quickly adjusted by pressing Mousewheel Up and Mousewheel Down to cycle between field types (attacking, defensive or custom), andC+ left click andC+ right click to cycle between field variations.
For more detailed adjustment, pressto access the Pause Menu and choose the Field Settings option. This allows different field positions to be set for each of the two batsmen (if one batsman is better than the other, set a defensive field for the stronger and an attacking field for the weaker of the two). It is also possible on this screen to create a Custom Field.
CUSTOM FIeLDING seTTINGS
By switching to a Custom field type, it is possible to scroll to the Edit button and fine-tune the layout of the fielding team. Having selected to Edit a field, move the on-screen cursor over any of the current fielding positions (shown as bright white markers) and press the Pick Up button to select that fielder. Then move the cursor to another field position and choose Put Down to confirm the move or Cancel Pick Up to abort. Once happy with the fielding changes, press the Confirm Changes button to confirm and exit the screen.

ConFidEnCE
As well as mastering the game controls, it’s important to monitor the confidence of both batsmen and bowler in order to know when to go on the attack or play cautiously.
Bowler confidence On-strike batsman confidence Off-strike batsman confidence Batsman timing bar
bàTTING A confident batsman is more likely to time shots correctly, find gaps in the field positions in order to score boundaries, and has a wider selection of shots available.
Scoring runs (especially boundaries) is the best way for the batsman to build confidence, and mistiming a shot or being hit by the ball is a sure-fire way to lose confidence.
bOwLING Confident bowlers will be harder to play against and have an increased repertoire of deliveries to choose from.
Taking wickets and beating the batsman are good ways to improve the bowler’s confidence, but being hit for boundaries will reduce confidence.

From here you can go to Team Select in order to assign yourself to a team and pick your squad for the forthcoming fixture, before being returned to the Lobby ready to play the match.
