Description

Revue d'histoire de la pharmacie - Année 1982 - Volume 70 - Numéro 254 - Pages 189-206
French Psychiatry and the use of drugs : Pomme, Pinel, Esquirol, Morel.
The study of four works consecrated to mental illness published between 1763 and 1860, a period when medication did not dominate psychiatric thinking, illustrating the disappearance of humoral pathology and signalling a conceptual transformation concerning pharmaceutical products. The treatment of lunacy, specifically, changed from one based on feeling which treated only the somatic manifestations, of the illness. The use of medication, increasingly less unusual as an idea governing psychiatric treatment, evolved with the progress of pharmaceutical science and became part of the therapeutic system associated with industrial pharmacy, omitting the issue of etiology and of nosologic distinctions which marked 19th century psychiatry.

Abstract
French Psychiatry and the use of drugs : Pomme, Pinel, Esquirol, Morel.
The study of four works consecrated to mental illness published between 1763 and 1860, a period when medication did not
dominate psychiatric thinking, illustrating the disappearance of humoral pathology and signalling a conceptual transformation
concerning pharmaceutical products. The treatment of lunacy, specifically, changed from one based on feeling which treated only
the somatic manifestations, of the illness. The use of medication, increasingly less unusual as an idea governing psychiatric
treatment, evolved with the progress of pharmaceutical science and became part of the therapeutic system associated with
industrial pharmacy, omitting the issue of etiology and of nosologic distinctions which marked 19th century psychiatry.
