Revue d'histoire de la pharmacie - Année 1980 - Volume 68 - Numéro 244 - Pages 53-61The Pharmacist Charles-Louis Cadet de Gassicourt, Illegitimate Son of Louis XV, and his Family. The Cadet de Gassicourt family has a surprising note in its history : Charles-Louis (1769-1821) was not the son of Louis-Claude (1731-1799) who, however, gave him his name and his education. Charles-Louis was, in fact, the natural son of Louis XV and of Marie-Thérèse Boisselet, wife of Cadet de Gassicourt and one of the most beautiful women of her time. This son of the king kept company with Condorcet, Buffon, Lalande, Franklin and d'Alembert; he became a revolutionary, acting as counsel for the poor ; he was heroic as a member of the National Guard and he wrote spiritual plays for the theatre. After the death of Louis-Claude he became a pharmacist and, determined to be a man of science, he published a chemical dictionary. He was a passionate follower of Emperor Napoléon I, became his personal pharmacist, and was made a Knight of the Empire (1810). He refused to accept the Restoration and died in despair in 1821. His last descendant died in 1964, without issue.
