This work is the first translation into a European language of a long extract of the «Book of happiness and of the way to make happy» (Kitâb al-sa'âda wa l-is'âd, pp. 348-388, ed. M. Minovi, Wiesbaden, 1957-8) by Abu 1-Hasan al-'Amiri (ob. 992). In regard to the kind of education the members of the city require in order to attain happiness, the author brings together precepts and advice which he draws from the Greek heritage (Republic, Laws, Nicomachean Ethics), and to a lesser extent, from the Arab-Muslim tradition (hadîth, Book of the Crown). As a sagacious compiler who does not hesitate to give his opinion he is an agent of and an exemplary witness to Arabic philosophical humanism of the 4th/ 10th century. In the notes an attempt has been made to identify, on the basis of the authentic works, the texts of Plato and Aristotle referred to by the author. (Transl, by J. Dudley).
Le présent travail propose la première traduction en une langue européenne d'un long extrait du «Livre du Bonheur et de la manière de rendre heureux» (Kitâb al-sa'âda wa l-is'âd, p. 348-388 de l'éd. M. Minovi, Wiesbaden, 1957-8) d'Abû l-Hasan al-'Amirî (ob. 992). A propos du type d'éducation que doivent recevoir les membres de la cité afin d'atteindre le bonheur, cet auteur réunit des préceptes et conseils qu'il tire du patrimoine grec (République, Lois, Éthique de Nicomaque) et, dans une moindre mesure, de la tradition arabo-musulmane (hadîth, Livre de la Couronne). Compilateur avisé et qui n'hésite pas à donner son avis, il est un agent et un témoin exemplaire de l'humanisme philosophique arabe du IVe/Xe s. Dans les notes, on s'est efforcé d'identifier, sur la base des corpus authentiques, les textes de Platon et d'Aristote auxquels l'auteur renvoie.
