The revolutionnaries used the principle of the sovereignty of the people in order to justify the publicity of the debates in the assemblies. It is the issue of the «place of the opinion» and of the autonomy of the legislator that was represented (notably with the reading at the gallery of the addresses to the legislators) and put in form (in specific parliamentary ritual). The exercise of legislative power is here understood as the ordered interlocution of a vast collection of public political discourses.

Les révolutionnaires ont justifié l'institution de la publicité des séances des Assemblées en invoquant le principe de la souveraineté du peuple. C'est alors toute la question de la «place de l'opinion» et de l'autonomie du législateur, qui, dans la controverse, a été mise en scène (par la lecture à la tribune des adresses aux législateurs notamment) et mise en forme (dans un rituel parlementaire spécifique). L'exercice du pouvoir législatif a été compris ici comme l'interlocution réglée d'un vaste ensemble de discours publics politiques.
