List of participants 22FOREWORD
This seminar on the provision and use of economic statistics
was heid in Gaborone from 6 to 10 April 1987. It was hosted by
the Government of Botswana and co-sponsored by the UK Overseas
Development Administration and the Statistical Office oí' the
European Communities.
The seminar was attended by participants from each of the
English-speaking SADCC countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi,
Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Both producers and
users of economic statistics were well represented and a
central theme of the seminar was the need for communication
between these two groups. In addition to the SADCC countries
and sponsoring organisations, participants also came from the
Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation, the World Bank,
the UN Economic Commission for Africa and from the statistics
offices of France, Germany and Sweden.
Participants were invited to contribute on the basis of their
own experiences as individuals rather than formally
representing their country. The aim was to provide an
opportunity for discussions at a technical level between those
directly concerned with tne provision and use of economic
statistics. The purpose was not to develop a set of
recommendations but to share experiences and ideas which could
help those taking part to assess their own procedures and
working practices.
