PRINTED IN THE NETHERLANDS PREFACE
Major differences, in the prevalence and clinical significance of
Leptospira infections, apparently exist between different Member States
of the European Communities. These differences may be real or they may
result from the wide variations which occur in the sensitivity of the
techniques being used to diagnose infection in different countries.
It is hoped that this meeting will help to
(1) increase awareness of the diagnostic techniques which are
available.
(2) aopreciate the limitations of these techniques and
(3) harmonise interpretation of results.
We would like to express our appreciation to the CEC Directorate-
General for Agriculture for sponsoring the meeting, the Director and
staff of the Veterinary Research Laboratories, Stormont, Belfast for their
help in organising the meeting and Belfast City Council, the British
Council and the Wellcome Foundation for their support.
