Thereasonsforthisarethevastamountofdataduetogeomet-ricdetailoftheterrain,vegetationandfurtherobjects,butalsotheinherentcomplexityof natural phenomena that are necessary to achieve convincing results. Realistic ter-rainrenderingalsohastoconsiderthecomplexlightingconditionsduetoatmosphericscatteringandfurtheraspectssuchastherenderingofwaterbodiesandcloudscapes.Onefocusofthisdissertationareproceduralmodelsforterrainelevationandtextur-ing. They can either be used to create completely artificial, realistic landscapes, mimicrealterrainsbyguidingthemodelswithreal-worlddataoraugmentacquireddatawithadditionalproceduraldetail. Bythis,wecanreproducenaturalsceneswiththeadvan-tageofacompactproceduraldescription.
