STRUCTURE OF THE THESIS

This thesis consists of two chapters, both of w hdicehal with learning and memory in the
fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Initially, I present a short summary in Enngdli shG earman
and a ‘General Introduction’ to give an overview t hoef thesis.

CHAPTER I Olfactory associative learning Drino sophila larvae
Firstly, together with Jana Husse and Bertram Gerr bwee established an one-odour-
version of the associative learning paradigm fDorr osophila larva established by
Neuser et al 2005 and investigated a possible dicsisaotion between innate attraction
and learnability of odours.

Secondly, in cooperation with Thomas Niewalda anodl lecagues we focussed on salt
processing, choice, feeding and learning showings hai ft from appetitive to aversive
in a concentration-dependent way.

Thirdly, together with Michael Schleyer and Bertra mGerber we studied the
neurogenetics underlying this kind of learning andde veloped a behavior-based
circuit-model of how outcome expectations organizlea rned behavior in larval
Drosophila.

In cooperation with Birgit Michels and cooleaguese wanalyzed the cellular site and
molecular mode of Synapsin action.

Mainly I focussed on the role of thyen aSpse Associated Protein of 47 kDa (SAP47) in
behavioral and synaptic plasticity.

These five aspects correspond to five publicatiocnosn cerning
Innate attractiveness and associative learnabiliotyf odours can be dissociated in
larval Drosophila.

Salt processing in larvaDl rosophila: Choice, feeding, and learning shift from
appetitive to aversive in a concentration-depende nwtay.

A Behavior-based circuit-model of how outcome extpaeticons organize learned
behavior in larvaDl rosophila.

Cellular site and molecular mode of Synapsin act iionn associative learning

Behavioral and synaptic plasticity are impaired unp olack of the synaptic protein
SAP47

CHAPTER II Associative learning iDrn osophila
Together with Ayse Yarali we studied predictive rlneiang of pain-relief in adult fruit
flies. It contains one manuscript:

Genetic distortion of the balance between punishmte nand relief learning in
Drosophila.

Finally, I present a General Discussion to summaer itzhe findings and give an outlook of the
presented projects.
A complete list of References, Curriculum Vitae a nAdcknowledgements complete this thesi s.

This work had not been possible without the effoofr tm any people, and the supervision of
Bertram Gerber. I take the opportunity to expreyss jomy in this collaborative work and
sincerely acknowledge all co-authors of each manruipstc, whose contributions are explicated
below. Special thanks also to Miriam Koblowsky ftohre nice picture of Walltraut, the nice
