The meeting Aphid antagonists was organized by the Commission of the
European Communities as part of the plant protection research
programme. This is in the framework of the aims of the joint agricultu­
ral policy, which conform to the decisions of the. Directorate General
for Agriculture through the work of the "Integrated and biological
control" Committee Programme.
Stimulated by the Commission of the European Communities, aphids have
been one subject of detailed studies: they are the cause of
considerable damage to cultivated plants, both directly through the
feeding punctures which can cause grave deterioration and even death in
the plants, as well as indirectly through the transmission of very
grave illnesses, especially through viruses, and with the aphid
excretions which become substrates for the growth of various fungal
agents disturbing the normal life processes of the plants themselves.
Such noxious insects display polyformism and a complicated annual
biological cycle in which typically one amphygonic generation is
followed by several parthenogenetic generations, which are often
asynchronous and heteroic. They have a particularly high biotic power
with exceptionally fast reproduction, forming descendants in an
exponential numerical progression which, as a consequence, enormously
increases the damage potential of this insect pest in a short time.
There is particular need for research, and an established method with
efficacious means of control with products which do not pollute the
environment, particularly using biological agents.
This is the third contribution to the aphid problem, under the auspices
of the Commission, after two previous meetings of experts at the
community level, held at Rothamsted (UK) and at Bruxelles-Gembloux (B).
These meetings permitted attention to be focused on aspects of aphid
forecasting and aphid pathogens, the presentation of a rapid key for
systematic identification of the main species of alate aphids and the
standardisation of capture methods which envisage the realization of a
possible European network (Euraphid) against this scourge.
EC Experts' Meeting /Portici /Nov. 1982 The works presented at this meeting held at Portici (I) and collected
in this publication deal with the biological control of many aphid
species of agricultural interest, with particular emphasis on cereal
aphids. This allows a knowledge of the lines of study which specialists
are now following and amply demonstrates the validity of this sector of
research.
