The COST Action 97 "Pathogenic Micro-organisms in Poultry and Eggs" continued its
activities with the organisation of a third workshop on: Development of monitoring
procedures, rapid detection methods and techniques. This is one of the four areas of
research in which the Action was divided and organised into Working Groups. The
Chairman of this Working Group is Dr C. Thorns, Central Veterinary Laboratory,
Addlestone, UK, who was also a member of the organising committee
After the Veterinary Medical Institute in Budapest. Hungary and the Veterinary Faculty of
the University of Zaragoza, Spain it was now the Institute for Animal Health, Compton,
UK who hosted the meeting. Participants from 14 European countries attended the
meeting and discussed the state of the art with respect to conventional and novel
microbiological detection and identification methods.
Participants took the opportunity to discuss future co-operation with or without submitting
projects to the European Union's research programme. A special session was included to
update participants on the recent BSE issues associated with meat.
Many thanks to Dr P. Jones (Compton, UK) and all the other local organisers for making it
a stimulating and enjoyable workshop. We would also like to acknowledge the support of
the European Commission, Directorate General XII/BSI (Dr Ζ. Somogyi), Unipath Ltd
and Hoechst UK Ltd.
