The December 2003 cattle livestock surveys in the European Union (EU-15) and the Acceding Countries show that the cattle population continues to fall slowly. Cattle numbers for the EU-15 are 1.4% lower than they were for the corresponding period in 2002.
Continuing declining stocks in 2004
The December survey estimates the total number of cattle in the EU-15 at 77.4 million. This means that the EU-15 accounts for just under 6% of the world cattle population, which according to the FAO (FAOSTAT) totalled 1.37 billion animals in 2003. At national levels, the changes ranged from -3.4 % in both Denmark and Finland, to +8.9% in Greece. Amongst the Acceding Countries, the changes ranged from -4.9% in Slovenia to +4.2% in Lithuania.
Decline in cattle production
Gross indigenous cattle production also showed a downward trend. Production is estimated to be about 26.1million for 2004, representing a fall of -1.2 %. This figure relates to animals actually reaching the market, and excludes animals that have been removed, for example, because of BSE. 15000
