independently of each other, the relations described are those that bring together several morpholog-ically distinct social "sets":

the descendants of "warriors" and Moorish "marabout" tribes; Haalpulaar "towns" along the Senegal River; and small groups of

more or less nomadic Fulani. These relations are placed in a territorial setting : Moorish emirates, the colonial impact on land and

tribes, land-based patronage, and the expulsion of most of the Fulani in 1989.
