La fonction grammaticale d'un mot peut-elle déterminer sa probabilité de rétention ?
Afin de répondre sur ce point, nous avons étudié la rétention de deux noms appartenant soit au SN1 soit au SN2 d'un énoncé. Les noms en question sont dans un rapport modifiant-modifié ; il s'agit d'un nom nucléaire (sujet ou objet) et de son complément.
Les résultats indiquent d'une part que le nom modifié est toujours mieux retenu que son modificateur, et d'autre part que le rappel du modificateur est étroitement lié au rappel du modifié. Le rappel du modificateur semble bien impliquer, au préalable, celui du modifié, tandis que l'inverse n'est pas vrai.

Does the grammatical function of a word determine its probability of retention ?
In an attempt to answer this question, we have studied the retention of two nouns belonging either to the NP1 or to the NP2 of an utterance. These nouns have the relation modifier-modified : one is a nuclear noun (subject or object), the other its complement.
The results reveal, on the one hand, that retention is better for the modified than for the modifier, and on the other hand that recall of the modifier is strongly related to recall of the modified. While recall of the modifier seems to imply a preliminary recall of the modified, the converse is not true.
