Description

Cahiers d'Extrême-Asie - Année 1991 - Volume 6 - Numéro 1 - Pages 1-20
The author examines Korean shamanism in an historical perspective. He looks first at the position of shamanism during the Koryô period (918-1392), when it enjoyed great freedom and was practiced by all classes of society. During the Choson era (1392-1910), the ruling literate class not only sought to forbid the practice of shamanistic ceremonies but struck the mudang a lasting blow by reducing them to the status of the lowest class of society. The author then describes the social activities of the mudang, reviewing the five functions that they assumed in the community. He presents a brief account of the manner in which shamanistic ceremonies were carried out.
