solutions, tecnologies wit convictions about te moral quality of society I am convinced tat more attention will be given to te moral dimension of social issues It is essential and inevitable At te same time I am convinced tat te tradition of Protestantism can and sould be a guiding force in tis era of radical canges he relationsip between God and te uman being, te inspiration of Cristian values andteir significance for reflection on social developments are instrumental in building a better society Protestantism can be a source of inspiration even in te twenty-first century his brings me to te meaning of a man, Dr Abraam Kuyper, wo played suc an important role in Dutc society in te second alf of te nineteent and te beginning of te twentiet century Kuyper was a brilliant student in teology and wrote is Dhtesiswen e was a young man He started as a minister in te Protestant State Curc in te village of Beesd here e no-ticed tat ordinary people ad an enormous knowledge of te Bible and very strong convictions He ten really understood te meaning of Calvinism hese experiences canged is convictions and is wole life Cristian values and Calvinism became is foundation He was convinced tat God was sovereign in all domains of life His deeply-rooted Cristian belief was not only a matter of religious consciousness and teology,but also a fundamental source of inspira-tion, bot for isdeveloping views on society, and for taking action He founded a Cristian newspaper,De Standaard, in ; te first political party in te Neterlands, te Anti-Revolutionary Party against te anti-Cristian princi-ples of te Frenc Revolution, in ; te Free University in Amsterdam wit a strong focus on Spere Sovereignty, in ; and te Reformed Curces in te Neterlands in  In  e gave a fundamental speec about te relationsip between te big social issues of tose days and te Cristian reli-gion at te first Cristian Social Congress In  e became Prime Minister he central element in Kuyper’s tinking and acting were Cristian values and convictions He demonstrated tis clearly in is famous Stone Lectures in  at Princeton Seminary in te USA hese lectures were about te sig-nificance of Calvinism for pilosopy of life,religion, politics, science, art and te future Kuyper did sow ow inspirational and deeply rooted convictions can be used as constructive means of criticism in bot te cases of teology and of society Protestantism, knowledge and te world of science are connected his book is not only an analysis of istory, it is also a source of inspiration for te future hat was te real meaning of tis conference Jan Peter Balkenende
