Description

A young Gambian immigrant explores the contrasting philosophies of his fellows in Paris with regard to the West: staunch Pan-Africanism versus hard pro-Western. This story demonstrates the triviality and pointlessness of the attitude of some African immigrants. A story that lifts the lid on the lives of Gambian immigrants in Paris - a world of tragedy, terror and futility, tempered by the voice of reason.

One: Deliverance
I have to unfetter myself from qualms and misgivings hanging over my world, or our world, like gathering rain clouds. Who am I? A hunter? An aggressive huntsman of Inalienable Rights? Here I am, sunk into the living depths of this concrete jungle, on a migratory route that has been so uncertain, and even more when I see myself through the great frontier, through the gates of this blue land of golden stars, equally unsure to me like existence itself. I am a wayfarer, a colonised-invader. Just as they did to my people in the 1880s, I will use trickery and magic to legitimise the raid, my presence in this material jungle planted with African trees of the 1900s. Not for trade or on a civilising mission, not for petrol or diamonds or gold, not for raw material or prestige. Not as a Lovett Cameron, a David Livingstone, a Henry Morton Stanley, a Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, an Admiral de Montaignac, a Léopold de Belgique, an Albert Sarraut, a Jules Ferry, a Joseph Chamberlain, a Général Joseph Simon Gallieni nor a General Adrian Dietrich Lothar von Trotha, but on a natural quest for humanity and for survival, in other words, to build on our reciprocal relationship, even if it is domineering. In the panorama, I can see a gruff antagonistic man-figure, eccentric like myself except for colour, but more severe than Smith and more brutal than Vorster. A male human frequently scorning our very personality, my people and I; pointing out our deficiency as humans, no virtues. Formulated law, made by one man for another man, a different man. I am an unwanted bloke though. Yes, but I know, and they know that I know about it all: that they are superior to me I don’t know that their regard speaks to me I know that they single out my meagreness I know
