USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

The A20 is an amplifier which allows a suitable Plantronics headset to be used with a
wide range of home or office telephones.

CABLING CONNECTIONS
Arrange components as shown in diagram
G
on page 2 and make all the connections as shown.
Remove the Handset Cable from the telephone and plug it into the Handset Cable Port (
16
).
Connect one end of the Base Unit Cable (
11
) to the Base Unit Cable Port (
20
).
Connect the AC Power Supply (
14
) to the AC Adapter Port (
18
) and to a wall outlet.
Connect the OLI (
15
) to the Accessory Port (
19
).

COMPONENT ASSEMBLY
The Amplifier (
21
) and the Accessory Deck (
13
) are connected by expanding the deck fully
(gently ease the right hand side of the deck out from the left hand side), and clipping the
amplifier into the two exposed slots that appear at the front of the Accessory Deck.
(See diagram
D
, page 1).
With the Accessory Deck Cover (
23
) removed, organise all related cables by pressing the cables
into the moulded slots. The power Supply Cable and OLI Cable run towards the rear of the deck.
The Base Unit Cable runs towards the left of the Deck. (See diagram
G
, page 1).
Replace the Accessory Deck Cover (
23
) and place the telephone on the Accessory Deck (
13
).
(See diagram
A
, page 1).
Connect the other end of the Base Unit Cable (
11
) to your telephone’s Handset Port.
Push the Headset Stand (
17
) into the Headset Stand Location (
22
) that is most convenient for
you to use.
Connect your headset to the Headset Port (
1
) using the Headset Cable (
2
) supplied.

ON LINE INDICATOR ASSEMBLY
The A20 package includes an On Line Indicator (OLI) (
15
) to visually notify co-workers when you
are talking on the telephone, using a headset. The indicator does not flash when you are using
the telephone handset.
Select a position where the OLI is visible – on your desk, on top of a computer monitor, or
mounted on the wall. The OLI may also be snapped onto the vertical struts of the Headset Stand
(
17
) as shown. (See diagram
F
, page 1).

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

PLACING A CALL
While wearing the headset take the telephone handset off-hook.
If you do not hear a dial tone, press the Headset/Handset Selector Button (
7
). Indicator lights will
automatically display. If indicator lights are displayed and you still do not hear a dial tone, you
may need to adjust the Configuration Dial (
12
) (see explanation on page 7).
Dial a co-worker to test connections and loudness settings.

MODE CONTROL
To move between Listen, Speak and Tone modes, simply press the Mode Selector (
4
) until you are
in the desired mode. The LED on the display provides a visual indication of which mode is active
(see diagram
B
, page 1).
The default mode is Listen, so if the mode selector is not used for 10 seconds the unit will return
to the default or Listen mode.

LISTEN VOLUME – HOW OTHERS SOUND TO YOU
If the Listen Volume (
8
) is too loud or too low, press the Mode Selector (
4
) to highlight Listen
Volume Indicator (
8
) (see diagram
B
, page 1) and then adjust Volume Rocker Switch (
3
) up or
down to increase or decrease volume (see diagram
C
, page 1).

SPEAK VOLUME – HOW YOU SOUND TO OTHERS
If the Speak Volume (
9
) is too loud or too low, press the Mode Selector (
4
) (see diagram
B
, page 1)
to highlight Speak Volume Indicator (
9
) and then adjust Volume Rocker Switch (
3
) up or down to
increase or decrease volume (see diagram
C
, page 1).

TONE LEVEL
Select Tone by pressing the Mode Selector (
4
) (see diagram
B
, page 1).
This increases treble or increases bass to the user’s ear.
Select a level (bass or treble) that is comfortable for you by adjusting the Volume Rocker Switch (
3
)
(see diagram
C
, page 1).

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

RECEIVING A CALL
While wearing the headset, when your telephone rings take the handset off-hook. Press the
Headset/Handset Selector Button (
7
) once to display indicator lights and talk normally.
Note: If the Amplifier is left in the Headset mode, simply take the Handset off-hook to answer
the call (see diagram
A
, page 1).

CONFIGURATION SETTING
The electronic configuration of telephone systems can vary. You can optimise the performance of
your Amplifier by stepping through the four configuration settings. The Configuration Dial (
12
)
is located on the left side of the Amplifier in front of the handset jack.
Place a call to a co-worker and while speaking turn the Configuration Dial (
12
) clockwise
until you achieve the best sound. A paper clip can be used to make turning the configuration
dial easier.
Experimenting with these four settings will not harm the amplifier or your telephone.

EARCONS AUDIBLE CUES
Your Amplifier provides both visual and audio feedback for all operator adjustments. EarCons
provide audio feedback in the form of different toned beeping sounds for different functions.
Double beeps indicate the ends and mid point ranges of each function.
The intensity of the EarCon Audible Cue can be increased, lowered, or turned off
(three levels plus off).
Simply hold down the Mute Bar (
6
) then depress the Volume Rocker Switch (
3
) (

decreases
volume or turns off EarCon;

increases EarCon Volume) (see diagram
E
, page 1).
Even though the user hears the EarCon, the calling party does not, even if you make adjustments
midway through a call.

I CANNOT HEAR A DIAL TONE
Press the Headset/Handset Selector Button (
7
).
Check that all connections are correct and firmly in place.
Ensure Headset is centered on your ear.
Adjust Configuration Dial (
12
) (see page 7).

TROUBLESHOOTING

I PLUGGED EVERYTHING IN BUT THE
LIGHTS WON’T COME ON
Plug the AC Adapter into another wall outlet and ensure the power supply is switched on.
Press the Headset/Handset Selector Button (
7
) at the front of the Amplifier to make sure Amplifier
is in headset mode.
NB. The OLI only works in Headset mode.

THE LIGHTS ARE ON BUT I CAN’T HEAR ANYTHING
WHEN I LIFT THE HANDSET
Turn the Configuration Dial (
12
) on the left hand side of the adapter clockwise through each of
the four positions until you hear dial tone.
Check that all the cables are completely plugged in and in the correct port.
Press the purple mode button and listen for a musical beep. If you don’t hear these musical
beeps there could be something wrong with the headset or adapter - call your supplier or local
Plantronics office for help.

I HEAR A DIALTONE WHEN I LIFT THE HANDSET BUT
THERE’S ALSO A RASPING NOISE
Turn the Configuration Dial (
12
) on the left hand side of the adapter clockwise to the next setting
until the dial tone can be heard normally. (There are four settings).
