Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791)
Le Nozze di Figaro (K 492): "Riconosci in questo amplesso" Sestetto, Atto III.
It isvox populithat the sextet "Riconosci in questo amplesso" was Mozart's favourite number from Le Nozze di Figaro. However, the original source for this information –Michael O'Kelly's "Reminiscences" (London, 1826)– is not as reliable a one might wish. Michael O'Kelly (1762-1826, a.k.a. Michele Occhelli) was the Irish tenor who created the roles of Don Basilio and Don Curzio at Le Nozze's premiere in Vienna, 1786. In the characteristically immodest tone of his memoirs, O'Kelly relates that, in spite of the adverse opinion of Mozart's, he decided to make Don Curzio stutter during the sextet, like Beaumarchais's character Brid'Oison in Le Marriage de Figaro. The result, always according to the tenor, was such a strepitous success that Mozart felt forced to offer him an apology, along with his congratulations. It is only too natural that O'Kelly, in his pretentious account of the facts, stated that the sextet was Mozart's favourite part. In any case, "Riconsci in questo amplesso" remains one of the most brilliant pages of the opera, perhaps the best after the finales of the second and the fourth acts. It is a wonderful sample of Mozart's mature polyphonic technique for vocal ensembles and, at this summit of Le Nozze's plot, an illustration of his supreme command of dramatic music to create humour, irony, and tenderness. The present edition is based on the score (n. 11462) published by C. F. Peters in Leipzig, in 1941. Damián H. Zanette
