This paper is a result of the study of the cave of Les Eglises at Ussat, Ariège, France, which contains a gallery with palaeolithic decorations. The paintings and engravings in the decorated gallery are critically examined and related to the cave topography and geology. A plan resulting from a theodolite survey is included. Previous work on the cave is critically examined. The results of a photographic study, using infra-red and ultra-violet techniques as well as visible-light, are examined to help differentiate between alternative theories advanced to explain the present incompletenes of all animal paintings in the cave and also to ascertain whether all paintings were made at the same time. Newly discovered paintings and an engraving are recorded. Photographs of some ot the art are included.
