COMPREHENSION
1 a The story takes place a few months after the end of the First World War.
1 b The story is told through Niska’s eyes.
2 Niska is Xavier Bird’s auntie, Elijah is someone Niska knows well, but not a relative.
Xavier and Elijah are friends.
3 The first letter informed Niska that Xabier Bird died at war
The second letter informed Niska that Elijah was alive, had lost one leg and was fit enough to travel back homeand be picked up.
4 Joseph Netmaker is close to Niska, he brings her her mail from the town which is far from Niska’s place. He can read english and translated the two letters to her and explained what was to be understood. He offered to travel with her to meet Elijah but she refused.
5 a Niska starts from her house, which is somewhere away from any village or any inhabited place, (she lives in a remote place). She must go to the town from where Elijah and Xavier had left to the war presumably.
5 b she travels on a small boat, a canoe, and goes down a river to the town.
5 c She goes there to get and bring back Elijah with her.
6 a He comes from an army hospital probably, from a city or an area far away from the town where Niska must go.
6 b He has come back because the war is over. He had been seriously wounded and has recovered (though he lost one of his leg) and so he must come back to where he belongs.
6 c The beast refers to a steam train.
6 d -l. 24 « smoke pouring from its sides »
-l. 26 « People wave from the windows »
-l. 29/30 « He walks slowly along the aisle »
- l. 33 « he slowly makes his way down the steps »
7 a For Niska, the canoe is a traditional means of transport , maybe the only one available to her, and the steam boat is refered to as a beast, something which is enormous and living.
7 b The canoe is a traditional means of transport for Indians . A journey cannot be done quickly as opposed to the steam train which symbolizes our modern society where a journey should be done efficiently and quickly.
8 a Niska is expecting to see Elijah, an indian man with a missing leg. And she can see none.
8 b She believes she sees Xavier, but it can’t be true to her because he is supposed to have died in 1918, that’s why she calls him a ghost. His appearance has changed a lot too, he has grown very skinny .
8 c We might infer that Xavier and Elijah were close friends in the past. They might have looked alike and were probably two proud men . So the man that Niska greets that day has become the shadow of his former self and has become hardly recognizable.
EXPRESSION
