nd2 Grade Benchmark Targets-English Language Arts Assurances By the end of second grade, the student will… Recognize, name, match and produce all uppercase and lowercase letters and know the order of the alphabet. Track print and know print concepts such as letters, words, sentences, questions, paragraphs, capitalization and punctuation marks. Identify and produce rhyming words (onset-rime) knowledge. Demonstrate understanding that spoken words consist of a sequence of phonemes. Identify and isolate the initial and final sound of a spoken word and blend sounds (phonemes) to make spoken words. Decode initial, medial, final consonants, short vowels, long vowels, consonant blends, consonant digraphs, r-controlled vowels, vowel diphthongs, vowel digraphs, and vowel variants. Recognize nouns (singular, plural, common, proper, possessive, collective, abstract, concrete, and abbreviations) and verbs (action, helping, linking, transitive, intransitive, regular and irregular) with and without spelling changes. Identify contractions, prefixes, suffixes, and derivations. ndKnow and be able to read all the high frequency words (Dolch) from PP-2 grade and read all selection vocabulary.
