CONTEXTE INTERNATIONAL

 INTERNATIONALCONTEXT
In 2001, the world economic situation was not particularly favourable. The economic downturn, which began in the USA in the early part of the year, gradually spread to other countries across the globe. European markets were also affected and their activity suffered a setback. Already penalized by the problems of its financial sector, Japan plunged into recession for the fourth time in ten years.
In watchmaking terms, markets did not all experience the same trend. In the USA, consumption immediately fell. Europe stood firm for longer. In Asia, Japan included, the forecast deterioration did not fully materialize.
Its presence in the luxury sector made the watchmaking industry less sensitive to economic fluctuations.
SWISS PRODUCTION
In 2001, 27.8 million finished timepieces were manufactured in Switzerland, 3.6% million pieces fewer than in 2000. This drop in volume was accompanied by a rise in value to 10.517 billion francs (+3.7%).

INTERNATIONALERKONTEXT

World exports of finished watches
In Europe, 2001 was a year of consolidation which confirmed the excellent year 2000 performance and even did slightly better. Asian results were less positive. All the data available suggests a downturn, especially in Japan and Hong Kong. Less expensive watches manufactured by Asian countries did not stand up as well in an environment of world economic slowdown.
In terms of average prices, Switzerland is still far ahead and gaining ground rapidly. Between 2000 and 2001, the average price of watches exported by Switzerland rose from 312 to 367 francs. The average of other countries for which figures are available is just 63 francs.

Development of Swiss watch exports
Swiss watchmaking export results were extremely good in 2001. Their value rose by 3.5% against 2000 and stood at 10.654 billion francs. The drop recorded in the USA, which remains the foremost market for the Swiss watchmaking industry, was easily offset by the European and Asian markets.
This growth was mainly accounted for by precious metal products whose value continues to grow strongly. Present at every level, steel also contributed to the healthy overall result.
S w i s sm a n u f a c t u r e r sa r ee x p o r t i n g increasingly expensive and complicated tim epieces. The value of mechanical watches, which represent less than 10% of the total number of pieces, rose from 47.6% to 52.0%. This figure reflects the trend of Swiss watchmaking to move up towards the higher end of the market.
