Be « Bêl » and shut up !

We had to wait until summer 2015 to see the international community finally realize the horror that the Syrian people are undergoing every day since that 15th March 2011.

For almost five years, the Syrian are experiencing daily the horror of the civil war as well as the terror of the jihadist groups.

Between the hammer of Daesh and the anvil of the Levant branch of Al Qaeda (Al Nosra Front, Ahrar al-Sham, etc.) the ethnic patchwork of Syria smashed to bits pushing Christians and other minorities to flee the country so as to escape the massacres made by the Islamic State and the shelling of the regime and its Russian ally.

It was not until seeing the surging wave of refugees reaching Europe that we recalled the archived images of the 1930s, when Jews fled the Nazi persecution and were scattered across the European roads in order to escape a certain death .

The parallel between the Jewish Holocaust and the Syrian drama is quietly startling especially through their despair and struggles for survival, the Jewish refugees of the early 20th century and the Syrians today owe their salvation to the commitment of the European democrats.

The European press has realized the extent of the Syrian tragedy only after the shock that the photo of a drown toddler (with a red shirt and blue pants, face against the ground, dead provoked.

The photo finally appeared on the front page of the British newspaper, "The Independent", where we could read the following : "Somebody's child".

The most read newspaper in the UK further added on the front page by posing the question:

"If these extraordinarily powerful images of a dead Syrian child washed up on a beach do not change Europe’s attitude to refugees, what will?"

In the Kingdom of Elizabeth II, "The Guardian", "The Times", "The Daily Mail", "Metro" and even the highly virulent tabloid "The Sun", have not hesitated to publish respectively on their front page the photograph showing the body of the three-year child carried by three Turkish policemen.

And the misery of the Syrian and even of mankind does not stop here.

In effect, last summer, after the United Nation confirmation of the destruction of the Temple of « Bêl » in Palmyra by the Jihadists of Daesh, the whole international community was speechless. That confirmation came after the satellite photos were taken on 27th and 31st August 2015.

This magnificent temple dedicated to the god « Bêl » meaning "Lord" or "spouse" in Semitic language was sanctuarised in 32 AD.

Unfortunately however, it was not until the followers of al-Baghdadi could take the reigns of the town by the end of May to witness the slating of this magnificent building, leaving only the frame of the stone erected at the main entrance. Meanwhile, the reaction of the Arab nations as well as that of the Arab League were nearly nul as the zero of Kawarezmi. Hushhh! Be quiet, you might wake them up!

However, in other climes, the migratory crisis caused by Syrian refugees and the destruction of the temple of « Bêl » have continued to make the headlines in the West.

Moreover, the rush of refugees has urged EU leaders to review the Treaty of Dublin and its very hard line against migrants.

While the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has set an example by granting the right to asylum to more than 800,000 Syrian refugees, Gulf countries have distinguished themselves through their silence.

Despite their dazzling , the petrodollar monarchies have not lifted a finger to host not even a single Syrian refugee.

While the militants of the European civil society, from Belgrade to Munich via Vienna have opened their hearts and purses to our Syrian brothers, the Arab countries remained definetely as a silent field of ruins, and have continued to

observe the tragedy that Sham children are undergoing as well as the annihilation of the "Tadmor" city (Palmyra in Arabic).

Which proves that, nowadays, the cautious and emotionless attitude of most Arab rulers can be ironnically summed up in: be « Bêl » and shut up!
