FBI: Passengers Fought, Saved Lives
Oct. 3 — Providing the most detailed glimpse
yet into the final moments aboard the hijacked
jetliner that crashed in Pennsylvania three
weeks ago, investigators today said the
passengers and crew fought and died like
heroes.

At a hearing on Capitol Hill this morning before the new House Terrorism and
Homeland Security Subcommittee, FBI counter-terrorism director Tim Caruso
confirmed passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 battled the terrorists who took
over their plane and probably prevented it from striking the nation's capital.
"I can confirm that the passengers engaged in a fight for their lives with their four
hijackers," Caruso said. "And most likely, as a result of their efforts, saved the
lives of unknown individuals on the ground."
The Boeing 757 crashed in a Pennsylvania field, killing all 44 people on board on
the day when two other hijacked planes destroyed the World Trade Center towers
in New York and a fourth smashed into a side of the Pentagon in Northern
Virginia.
Officials believe United Flight 93, which departed from Newark, N.J., at 8:42 a.m.
ET before crashing two hours later, may have been headed toward a major
landmark in Washington.
