What we’ll be doing
HIST 1400 is a survey (overview) of the history of Western Civilization (defined as Western
Europe, North America, Latin America, Australia, and other places with cultures that originated
primarily in Western Europe)
in the “modern” era, which is to say,
from the Italian Renaissance
(1300s) to the present. As with most college history courses, we will be advancing beyond
“high
-
school history,” with its emphasis on memorizing raw historical data, and examine the
ways that professional historians learn about, interpret, and explain the Western past.
What
you’ll get out of this
1.
A structure of Western history:
HIST 1400 will provide you with the basic structure of
Western history since the 1300s.
2.
Improved critical thinking skills:
HIST 1400 will expose you to new ways of thinking
about and interpreting the broad sweep of Western history
of going beyond
memorizing names and dates and figuring out why things happened the way they did.
3.
Preparation for future study:
HIST 1400 will prepare you for the further study of
history, whether as a student in more advanced courses here at the University or on
your own.
4.
Greater familiarity with historical sources:
HIST 1400 will introduce you to a wide range
of historical sources, including poetry, memoirs, political speeches, and essays.
5.
Learning to think and behave like a professional:
HIST 1400 will introduce you to the
ways that professional historians practice their craft.
How all this happens
To achieve these outcomes, we will use a variety of learning techniques, including analytical
lectures, storytelling, guided discussions, reading and reflecting on a variety of historical
sources, writing dialogues and other assignments, and taking quizzes and exams. The reason
that we will be doing so many different things is because the class is so large. With
