Fresco Fine Art Publications (www.frescobooks.com) announces the publication of its newest bookTexas Traditions: Contemporary Artists of the Lone Star State. The book is co-authored by Michael Duty and Susan Hallsten McGarry and is distributed by the University of New Mexico Press (www.unmpress.com and 800 249-7737).The book will be available in September, 2010 at all area outlets as well as Amazon.com.
The state of Texas is a vast land of tremendous variety. From the lush piney woods of East Texas to the semiarid deserts of West Texas, from the Gulf Coast to the High Plains of the Panhandle, the land, people, and legends of the Lone Star State have inspired an equally diverse group of painters and sculptors.
Texas Traditionsbrings together both historic and contemporary artists, showcasing their work in more than 200 images as colorful as the men and women who created them. Michael Duty, who selected the artists appearing inTexas Traditions, authors a lead essay which puts into context Texas artists working in traditional formats from the mid-19th through the early 20th centuries. “Although the art of Texas and the American West has room for myriad interpretations, styles, techniques, and subjects, there are certainly recurring themes that continue to call to modern artists to place their particular stamp on their interpretations,” Duty writes. “Those themes have provided the bedrock that artists from the 1830s to the present have built their careers on.They are the eternal verities of Western American art and they have certainly played large roles in the history of Texas art.”
Co-author Susan Hallsten McGarry interviewed 36 contemporary artists whose paintings and sculptures pay homage to both narrative and emotional responses to the Texas ethos.Taking readers into the artists’ studios, McGarry reveals the artistic influ-ences that compel each creator to find his or her unique style and voice. “Whether inspired by the Texas longhorn, prickly pear cacti, Big Bend, the Rio Grande, working cowboy or modern-day cowgirl, the Hill Country, or one of the last virgin tall-grass prairies in the United States, these artists are determined to leave their marks for appreciators today and tomorrow,” McGarry says.
For art lovers who take pride in their home state or for those drawn to the irresistible allure of Texas,Texas Traditionswill be a library addition that refuses to stay on the shelf. Rather, readers and viewers will enjoy endless hours of vibrant, moving imagery, Texas geography and trivia, and the kind of artistic personalities that reveal why Texas stands out as not only a place but also a persona.
