THE DEATH OF

OSAMA BIN LADEN

The death of Osama Bin Laden (OBL) is a strategic victory for the United Kingdom, the United

States and all those threatened by Islamist terrorism. As the founder and leader of Al Qaeda

for two decades, OBL was directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians, and has

propagated a profoundly destructive ideology. His death is a major blow to Al Qaeda and its

affiliates, who rely heavily on his status as a tool of recruitment and inspiration.

Implications for the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT)

•

OBL's death is unlikely to

have an immediate tangible

end to the GWOT. Al Qaeda

is

a

decentralised

organisation, with affiliates

and individuals inspired by

its ideology operating across

the Middle East, North Africa

and Central Asia. They will

most

likely

continue

to

operate despite his death.

• OBL's ideology and status as a "martyr" is

likely to continue to inspire attacks against

Western interests worldwide, and his death will serve as a pretext for revenge attacks in

the short term.

Implications for Afghanistan

• OBL's death will likely have no discernible impact on the day

-to-day operations of the

insurgency, which should in any case be distinguished from Al Qaeda.

• Where his death will be significant, however, is in terms of the psychological impact it

could bring to bear on both sides. For the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the elimination of this

figurehead will shake their confidence in the inevitability of their cause, and this should

certainly be capitalised upon in terms of efforts to weaken the resolve of lower-level

Taliban insurgents.
