developing selfdefense skills through sportive  Traditionalists who've an "old school" mindset towards the martial arts typically possess a rather negative attitude towards training in the martial arts as a sport. What is the reason for this negative attitude? It's that a lot of them believe that proficiency in self-defense is undermined by training for sports. Since the original function of the martial arts is self-defense, it should not come as a surprise that there exists the belief that investing time in sportive training is self-defeating. Nevertheless this is not altogether true, nonetheless. The fact is that the sportive aspect of training can considerably help your ability to defend yourself. And this is due to several reasons.   mixed martial arts hints  Firstly, you can actually develop many attributes that can help you transition into real-world combat when you train sportively. These attributes are timing, evasive expertise, reaction speed, and explosiveness just to mention a few. All of these attributes are going to be helpful if you ever are in a situation wherein you need to protect yourself. As a matter of fact, they could be what will save your life.  Stoic or non-resistant martial arts training can be lacking in the realistic energy required to defend yourself properly. Rather than training in a martial arts that does not have resistance, it's much better to put hours of training time in one wherein you're able to train with someone who fights back. This does not necessarily mean that the two of you should injure each other or go very hard.  For attribute development, light contact sportive training is in fact sufficient. And naturally, you need to always have on the proper gear and safety equipment when you are training. This will minimize the likelihood of injuries. Then again, you should expect to be whacked during a fighting session. That's just to be anticipated whenever you are live training. The wonderful thing about training is that you will develop some level of toughness. Toughness has the potential to help you handle physical pain (to a degree) if you ever have to defend yourself in an encounter.  One thing that must be pointed out, the sportive component of training should not be the only way you train when you're focusing on the martial arts for self-defense. You should undertake some scenario-based combat training. This means you are going to participate in training sessions that are meant to mimic an actual common self-defense situation. The person playing the role of the "bad guy" is not going to attempt to spar you athletically, but he's going to assume the role of a non-resisting and uncooperative assailant. Just like athletic sparring, scenario-based training requires that you wear proper gear and equipment for you and your training partner's protection.
When you merge sportive training in the martial arts with reality-based self-defense training, you're far more likely to develop effective personal protection skills. Obviously, it is most desirable if you never need to use your self-defense skills in the least, but having knowledge of such skills could ensure your personal safety.
