Driving and Parking Your Car in Blizzard and Near Blizzard Conditions
Snow, Ice, and the Cold Can Be Dangerous to Your Car and to You
Within the last month, Omaha, Nebraska has faced damaging winter weather four times. Before one snow fall has a chance to melt, another one comes and forces the piles of snow to grow deeper. This wintry weather has also hit Texas and Florida as well as the Midwest part of the United States and the East Coast.
It has been hard for the cities' snowplows to try and keep the main streets clear during these blizzards and near blizzard conditions. The side streets have even been worse. The snow which can easily melt and refreeze becomes like ice and is very slick. It may become impossible to get up a hill. In going down the hill, there may be concerns about the brakes working.
The snow drifts on each side of the road created by the blizzard and snow plows hold another danger which can quickly become clear when turning a corner. If the turn is to sharp than the car may be able to enter the snow drift but not leave it. Trying to force the car to plow through the packed snow can easily damage the car. Replacing a broken axle can cost $200.00.
Getting caught in a snow drift or having a car accident can also occur when two cars meet on a side road. The trick is for one car to pull over and the other car to slowly pass. There is the hope that the snow from the blizzard actually left enough room for this to occur. The main problem with having the cars pass each other is if one of the drivers is not aware of the importance of driving way below the speed limit at such times.
Another danger in all the snow from a blizzard is in leaving a car that is parked outside alone for too many days. It may be hard enough to start a car on a cold winter morning when it was driven the day before but days of lack of driving could make it even worse. I noticed this when I didn't use my car one day because of near blizzard conditions and and tried to start it the next day. It took quite a while for the car to turn over and I was in danger of having my battery run down. This occurred before the really cold weather set in. Ever since then, I have started my car and let it run until the engine was warm even if I was not going to drive it. I have not had that problem since even though the temperatures have dropped below zero at night.
In checking with sciencenetlinks.com, it turns out that without any wind, cars can take 8 to 12 hours to cool down. Starting the car every day may be helping it from getting too cold for too long to start again. Further research to How Stuff Works mentioned that it may also be wise to usetonneau coversand have the battery looked at.
Blizzard and near blizzard conditions can cause many problems with a car whether it is being driven or left in its parking place. These are a few things to consider if the snow and cold continue to come to the Midwest, the East Coast and even Texas and Florida.
