The Plainsman was a fat break for Anthony Quinn (1915-2001). Trying out for a role as an Indian, the adolescent actor, who claimed to be an authentic Native American, was brought in to run into DeMille and a technical adviser. “Say something in Cheyenne,” ordered the famed director.

Feigning complete confidence, Quinn uttered some comprehensive gibberish. “Fit?” Cecil asked his assistant.

“He speaks the language perfectly,” replied the other fraud.

Quinn got the part and months following, DeMille found out that his present employee was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and was raised in East LA. Eventually, the beautiful Anthony Quinn became Cecil’s son-in-ruling.
